How much would you guess labor/materials for 500 ft of 5 strands of barbed wire fence with t posts?

A buddy is having some feed pens built and I think he may have been quoted too much.

I would think it would depend on how many corner posts need to be anchored. Without knowing that it would be hard to say. Running a straight line of 500 feet with wire and posts is not that expensive.

Easy enough to call the stores in your area and find out the cost of the materials. That's where you should start. They can give you a quote of the materials over the phone. Figure up your dimensions and add it up. I would go and buy the materials myself and then have the contractors come in and build it.
Also depends on if there is brush in the area that needs to be cleared out first. Add in water lines as well.

A lot of variables. Flat-Hilly-sand-dirt-rock-straight-round -square? Tee posts 5 1/2' $4.50 Barb wire 2 point about $60. for 1/4 mile. Labor is the killer.

Be sure to buy domestic (made in USA) wire, the imported stuff is a crap shoot you may get a roll that is good and then get another that you can almost break with your hands and rusts out in a few years off of the same pallet.

I had 6000' of 48" net wire fence built 1.5 yrs ago now. Materials were around $1.10 per foot with 8" x 10' cedar corner posts and 1.33 tpost every 15'. Wire was class III 12" spacing net wire that was $300/660' roll. T-post were 6'1/2' and cost $4.69. Corner post were $35 each. Braces pipes were 2 3/8" pipe and don't remember the exact cost now. Had and "H" brace every 1/4 mile with all cedar posts 5' deep and 3 post brace on the ends. Labor was about .99/ft. This fence cost a bit more since there 4 breaks in the fence and a total of 35 "H" brace posts. Labor was broke down into .75/ft on labor + $40 per corner post hole dug. This was all black dirt and some caliche type soil.

What the other said,, 1 pen or 4 pens? how many corners and what material quoted for those? As mentioned, a str8 run of 500' fence is easy if the "H" brace or ends are in place. Add a bunch of corners for small pens and the price will go up. Best bet is to get 3-4 quotes from guys that have the details (boots on the ground).

What did the 6000' of fence cost you total? Neighbor is needing some and was wondering an approximate cost. I know it would be higher here because of the rock.

Labor was $6037.25 and materials were around $6650 on total of 6,080 ft.

Cost runs 2.35 to 2.45 per foot here with 7 barb or 48" with a barb on top using high tensile net. H braces with a kicker run 250. and kickers run 150.00. The less fence the more it cost per foot.

That's going all metal with five T posts then a line post.

My last fencing project (7572 feet) ran about $2.05/foot plus the cost of ROW clearing. Half was flat but the other half had some very steep inclines. Lots of rock, three water gaps, three gates and several "H" braces. Don't remember the exact number. Clearing the old fence and opening up the ROW took 20 hours of D6R dozer time at $145/hour. Your dozer costs can vary depending on the terrain and if you are competing with the oil patch for dozer work.

And I am still waiting on a $9000 check from the ^^^^^ landowner on the other side of the fence who shook hands and agreed to split the costs.

Your fencing cost are way less than around here. And around here good luck with getting help from the ones on the other side.

OUCH!!

I'm having just over 9000ft of 5 stand put in and my total cost will be around $13000. Had 3 metal gates, 1 barb gate, a 110ft top rail welded angled entrance, 6 corners, and 5 extra stays.

$2500/mi - fence labor
$30/ hr - welding
$100/stay
$100/corner
$1300 - 36 joints of pipe
$4.50 per pole - 12ft centers
$62/roll barb wire
$300 shedding

It should be finished this week, weather permitting. Luckily my place isn't rock like south tx. I pushed back the mesquites with a front loader kubota. That only cost me a case if beer and some diesel.

Did you cement in the corners and line posts?

No. I wondered about that but I told him he's the fence expert. I did check the poles before he strung wire and they were solid. Btw - He has built most of the fences around my place and has done it for over 30 years.

Just curious, if your buddy is looking to just build feed pens why is he going with 5-strand barbed wire? Wire won't keep the pigs out, and 5-strand is more than you need just to keep cows out.

Hog panels are pretty easy to build a pen with and will keep cows and pigs out. If just a feed pen, you don't need to cement any posts; t-posts will do the job just fine. Hog panels run about $22 at TSC. 10 makes for a good-sized pen. Figure about $300 in materials (panels and T-posts) for each.

If he just wants to keep cows out, a 2-strand fence will get it done. Gaucho wire runs about $40 for 1,300 ft at TSC. That's enough to build right at 4 pens. Figure another $70 or so for T-posts per pen.

Man, I never want any more Gaucho wire on the place. Like working with a spring steel slinky with barbs.

Yeah, it's kind of nasty to work with. Good way to punch holes in gloves and anything else.

4 point barbed wire is another invention of the devil. That stuff is evil.

$13,000 for 9000 ft. of barb wire fence? If that fence builder was around here he would have work backed up for the rest of his life.

2 corners and 1 h brace - $450
5 strands @500 ft = 2500ft barbed wire - $150
50 (10 foot spacing)6ft t-podt $3.75 at cost, probably $5 retail. $250
materials $850
plus labor at $.80/foot $400
$1250 total depending on terrain

I know. When I started looking at adding the fence, I saw a few posts on this forum and was thinking it was going to cost 13k a mile plus the entry gate. Found 2 people around lubbock and spur that were about the same cost. Decided to use the local spur guy because of keeping it local, using local feed store, establishing local repor etc....He has been building fences for over 30 years and also runs cattle on several other places. Guess whom I'll contact when I get ready to buy some bred cows.

The other guy is a green card holder. Comes back across as he picks up work. Ive watched him hand drive 96 poles from 7am to 12pm. Weighs about 175 and can literally rip you arms off.

Both are great people but choose the local for obvious reasons.
