I am thinking about getting a judge to carry when out in the pasture for rattlesnakes. My wife is wanting one too. She can handle shooting my glock 23 but it is all she can take as far as the recoil. My question is how much recoil does the judge have in comparison to a glock 23?

My wife can easily shoot a judge with one hand and she is a pansy when it comes to guns

With the Judge the recoil is different with the different loads available. With 45LC cowboy loads and shot shells recoil is not much at all. Load in 410 shell and recoil is more like a 44Mag.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Just get some rat shot for a pistol you own.

IMO the judge is a marketing gimick. You would do just as good getting rat shot in a pistol that you already own.

Rat shot works well on snakes be it 22 or 45, having a sidearm that is as versatile as the judge or S&W Governor is a big + IMO.

I was very skeptical of the Judge. Thought it was pure gimmick. Then I watched a YouTube video demonstration by a well-known guy (forget his name). It was straightforward and very impressive.
For home defense the combination buckshot loads were especially good.

For snakes though, any pistol would work OK.

Would you rather have a revolver that doesn't really do what a .45 LC or a .410 does best, or would you rather have a Rossi Snakecharmer .410 for about 1/5 the price of the Judge?

I've never understood why the need for ratshot?????? What if you need to shoot something bigger or further away and your gun is loaded with useless ammo? Just shoot the snake in the head with a regular hollow point/hunting/varmint round. If you can't hit it, you shouldn't be carrying a gun. Get a stick. grin

The Judge and the .410 is another deal. Good close in defense weapon

My wife and I both carry Judges with 3 in barrels and standard chambers. The recoil is very easy to handle. We load #4 person defense shot for crawly snakes and 225 gr Leverlutions for all of the other ones. It is nothing like a 44mag. In fact our 12 year old g/daughter has shot it too.

I have a 3" model (for the 3" 410 rounds). To date, I've taken 14 rattlesnakes with it and one rabid skunk. All with the 410 2 1/2" rounds. Recoil isn't bad.
The snakes I've taken have been from 2' to 10' away (the 2' range was the one trying to climb into the Ranger with us laugh ). All were 1-shot kills but the one that I shot about 6" behind his head (only part of the snake close to the head I could see).
To the one's that say to just 'shoot 'em with a hollow point', 6 of the snakes were on/in rocks and the lead shot didn't ricochet nearly as bad as the 9, 40, 45, 22 rounds would have.
Putting one on your hip frees up your hands for other work. I carry mine during deer season as well as during turkey season to I can handle my rifle or shotgun. Having to carry a second long-gun would be overly cumbersome.
Since I started carrying mine, 4 more have been purchased by others on this same ranch.
Haven't tried it out for skeet shooting yet wink .

Purchased the "Judge" with Crimson Trace Laser for my wife. She loves it. After a near miss with feral hogs during Spring Turkey hunting, I started carrying it loaded with .45 ammo and used it on a boar two years later. Now, we own two "Judges."

.357 better choice, you can use .38 special for her and use the .38 rat shot for snakes

If you get the judge, just make sure it is a model with three finger grip. Mine is a two finger grip, and that makes the recoil a difficult to control, especially for a woman.

Lol I have tried mine for skeet behind the house, took a half a box of sixes but I finally got the hang of it and started hitting a few, trick is to be fast on the trigger before you lose range... aim Ihave had my Judge since they first came out am a big gimmick kinda guy, I keep the gimmickers in business...I love mine, my wife who does not hunt likes to shoot mine with no complaints about recoil with 2.5" pdf shotshells. I also carry mine when snakes may be a problem with 4 shot works great. Had a big cottonmouth attack my four wheeler while spraying for fall food plot prep and was soooo glad had my judge on my hip, he hit the fender first strike and drew back for a second shot at my leg but he got JUDGED....good weapon and for all the naysayers, why yall gotta be negative all the time? life is short laugh a little, love a lot and lighten up you may live longer.... cheers

Recoil isn't that bad. The 45lc is easy to control and hit your target the 410 shell could be a bit much. The recoil on the g23 feels like it goes back more than the muzzle flips up like the judge. The pdx rounds are somewhere in the middle and probably a good choice if worried about recoil. If you are really concerned about it check out a gun range and rent one.

Definitely need the 3 finger grip. I'm a big dude and can handle most any gun, but I shot a judge with 2-finger grip and the recoil was pretty intense.

I am not a fan of the Judge kind of pistols. recoil is not bad. If she shots the 40 ok she should be fine with the 410.I shot a snake two weeks ago with one and have shot them before. After all the reviews on using the 410 for home defense there is no way i would use one. For snakes is the only reason i would shoot one. It is nice shooting snakes with shot instead of a bullet that could keep going if it hits a rock. Just get her some ratshot and save the money for something else. just my $.02

I have large hands and the recoil drives the trigger guard into the middle finger on my strong hand. It hurts. Others I've talked to don't have this problem so your mileage may vary.
