I've been looking at semi auto 22's for a couple of months. I'm not the type to buy a certain brand just because everyone else does. I've been looking at the Remington 597 and they look like really good rifles. I can buy one at Academy for $199 with a scope already mounted (doesn't look like the cheapest 22 scope, either). Do any of you have one of these, and are they as well made as they seem to be? Accuracy? Durability?

Thanks.

When they first came out( when I was a teenager) I saved all spring and summer to buy one. I read every magazine article/add about them, and lusted after one all spring and summer. Right before squirrel season started in the fall, I finally saved enough to buy one. My brother took me to the store, and we picked a brand new Remington 597, a 3x9 scope, and a brick of ammo. I was as happy as a pig in $#!+.

Then I took it out to sight it in. Jammed nearly every magazine. I thought I was doing something wrong, but just so happened a Guns and Ammo article came out that month saying that they too experienced magazine jams. They said Remington said it was all how you loaded the magazine. Paying careful attention, I loaded the magazine per instructions and went squirrel hunting.

Well, the damn thing continued to jam, and cost me squirrels. I sold it at a yard sale, and bought a Marlin Model 60.

At the time the Remington 597 was 139$ new, and I bought my Marlin for 95$ new.

My favorite 22 rifle is the Remington 552 Speedmaster. Fantastic rifle. Tube fed. Big Game sights, nice wood stock. shoots short long and long rifle interchangeably. Mine is accurate as hell, and it was only cleaned once since 1977. Super reliable.

I have one and love it. It's not the same one you are getting but is the same action. At first, I had a jam on the fourth shot every time. I contacted Remington and they sent me a new mag. Ever since, I have yet to have an issue. I have shot a few thousand rounds without issue.
The early 597's did have magazine issues and Remington was and is aware of it. You can Google the topic. Remington's customer service was excellent to me!! The rifle is also beyond accurate. I would not trade my 597 hb for any 10/22.

Mines in 17 HMR and it's been flawless.

Since I added the volquartsen hammer spring, it does not feed the last round in the magazine
automatically, I have to pull the bolt and then it feeds. Other than that it's been great.
It's super accurate. I love it. complete dis-assembly is a pain though.

I have a 597 and would recommend the Ruger 10/22 over it. The 597 has a horrible stock trigger and is known as jam-o-matic by some owners. An after-market trigger is a must, as is only shooting better grade ammo.

You will also find many more after-market accessories for the Ruger.

Everyone I know that's had a 597 has had jamming problems. It's the design of the magazine, not the parts themselves. Lots more choices with the Ruger on updates. I'd recommend one of the Marlins second to the Ruger.

Pass the gravy.

Bought one a few months ago for a suppressor host. No issues at all so far. Put a cheap scope on it for now and seems to do fine. Only ammo it won't cycle is the Aquila sub sonics

BIL has one. Cycles fine. We shot a ton of Remington golden bullets last trip. I think jammed twice out of 200 or so rounds. And it's still new. It's getting better and better.

I bought a 597 in 22 magnum when they first came out and it is very well balanced and extremely accurate with heavier bullets but it is not a reliable piece. Basically it is a good gun with a terrible magazine and feed system. I would not buy another one unless they would guarantee me it would not hang up and if it did not jam I would be happy to own and shoot it. I hate unreliable guns so go with the 10-22, it will shoot when you pull the trigger.

I guess I've been lucky. Got a 597 in 22 mag about 10 years ago. Tack driver with a Leo rifleman on it and never had a jamming issue. Last year I got a 597 in 22LR, Ducks Unlimited edition from a THF member for my uncle. Helped him scope it and sight it in. Got it shooting dead on with no cycling issues.

I have two, no cycling issues with either one, and it loves the CCI Subs.

I put in a Volquartsen target hammer, extractor, and MCarbo trigger spring kit. Shoots like a champ.

I also have a 10/22 but I rarely shoot it.

Well, it looks to me like the early models had feeding issues, but maybe they fixed the problem in the later models. Has anyone purchased one in the last few years that had feeding issues?

Thanks, Artie

I have a couple of the regular models and recently bought the Yellow Jacket model. I like them and have no issues with them. Early on there was a magazine issue. I believe the good magazine have a 10 with a circle around it.
The other thing that can cause issues is the screws that go thru the bolt being to tight.

Another vote for the 552, especially the older ones with the brass bead front sight and ramp rear sight.

Well, for what you would spend on a 552 I can buy a complete 22LR upper for and AR. I know that some really like the look of the 552, but it doesn't really appeal to me. Sorry, that's just my preference. I haven't fired one, and that might change everything for me.

Rem 597 is a P.O.S.

Ruger 10/22 is a fine piece of machinery.

That's the short answer.

I purchased a 597 when the first arrived on the market and had a long list of problems. I sold it to Gander Mountain, and had no regrets. I went home and picked up my 25 year old 10/22 and was happy to be handling a reliable .22 lr again.

As has been previously mentioned, they seem to have fixed the reliability issues. Everybody I have talked to who has bought a 597 the last few years has been happy with their purchase.

I have a model 60 which is great but wanted a .22 mag semi-auto. Bought a CZ 512, had some trigger work done and it is awesome. I'm thinking about buying another .22 mag semi-auto in the near future. If I do it will be a 597 if I can purchase an after market trigger or find someone to get the trigger pull below 3 lbs.

If you get a Volquartsen target hammer ($45) and an MCARBO spring kit ($30) the trigger is much nicer!
