Hello, fellow hunters. I'm heading north of BC the end of May to go on my first black bear hunt. I'm going to use this opportunity to increase my firearm arsenal and am strongly considering a new 300 win mag. I'm looking at the Savage Long Range Hunter and others. Does anyone have any experience with the Savage that you'd care to share or have other recommendations on rifles I should consider? Any information is appreciated. Thanks a bunch, and happy hunting to all.
Oh, and if anyone has any leads on an all-year, most-game lease in west Texas around the Shackleford, Throckmorton, Coleman County areas, please let me know. I've been hunting in Throckmorton the past 5 years.

I have zero problems with my Win 70 Boss 300 WM, Browning A-Bolt 300 WM, or Remington 700 5r 300 WM.
Good luck hunting.

JDK, my apologies for the delayed response. I didn't receive an email alert and haven't been back on until today, waiting until I received a reply. Thanks so much for the suggestions. Much appreciated.

The Remington 5R or a Sendero would be my pick.

Go all in and get a custom What he said. Calibers: .308 win, .30-06, .300 WSM, .300 Win Mag, .300 Weatherby Mag, .300 HH Mag, .300 RUM, .325 WSM, .338 Marlin Express, .338 Federal, .338-06, .340 Weatherby Mag,.348 Winchester, .356 Winchester, .358 Winchester, .35 Whelen, .350 Rem. Mag., 9.3x62, .444 Marlin and .45-70 to start. Probably missed a bunch. Ammo: Barnes TSX, Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Hornady InterBond, Nosler Partition and AccuBond, Remington Core-Lokt Ultra, Speer Grand Slam and Swift A-frame. Probably missed a bunch here too. If your in Northern BC you might want to have a gun big enough to handle Mr Griz, as an encounter is not out of the realm of possibility.

I love my 5R, it's a great shooter. That said I'd say screw it go custom.

Thanks a lot, guys. Tons of great advice. Not sure if I have the time now to customize in time to get enough rounds in on the range but I may look into it. I'm now also considering a Browning a-bolt ii medallion.

No prayer in school....What's next, no thinking in church? It's not just about pie in the sky when you die. It's also about steak on your plate while you wait!

I like the savage rifles .. I shoot a couple and also have the Remington 5r .. You can do a lot of cool stuff off that savage action
In God I trust.. all others are suspect. ;))

I actually have a rem 700LSS in a 300 win mag and it does have some custom work on it, but it flat out shoots awesome.
