You hunt on a one trophy allowed, low fence ranch and late into a decent season of which you have not taken a shot, down 150 yards of a sendero pops out a very nice 170", 10pt.. He's looking back in the brush and lo and behold, a 200"+ non-typical emerges. What do you do? Thanks for playing...

Shoot both and pack my stuff cause I know I am not going to be back next season I would shoot the older of the two first and foremost. If they are the same age it would boil down to which was the better looking buck. Since I am a big fan of mass the one with the most mass would way heavy into the decision also. I don't care for a 140" NT with 60"+ of trash that ends up scoring 200". Now if it was a 185" typical with 15" of trash he would get a ride home.

Shoot the younger deer and hope the older one has a heart attack in the middle of the sendero. That, or this: Shoot the typical as my trophy and shoot the nontypical as my cull... because you don't want those genetics spreading Or this: Shoot both and pack my stuff cause I know I am not going to be back next season It is very important that the second buck doesn't get away because no one would want to be around me with all the sleep I would lose waiting for the next deer season to roll around.

Probably shoot a hole in the bottom of the blind trying to get a shot at either.

It took me a minute but I guess the question is shoot the 170 TYPICAL or the 200 non typical.... I guess for me it's which rack looks the biggest or the best.
symetrical (sp) 170 v 200 with trash every where I'll shoot the 170
200 somewhat symetrical with drops and splits ect. I'll shoot the 200
In reality once I could tell the first buck was 170.... BANG!!! I'd probably never see the 2nd buck.

Niether, they both spooked off when I said "Holy Sh-t!". No back in camp believed me, since nothing bigger than a 145" has ever been seen on the lease. I am ostricized and ridiculed for being a liar. However, the lease manager decided to raise the price by 50% for the next year, just in case. I am voted off the lease for causing problems.

If the 200" Non-typ is mature and the shot is clear I believe he'd be my target.
Then I'd be real curious about how I arrived in big deer country because I dang sure ain't hunting the Llano Co place if this happened.

Shoot the 200 EVERY time... a 170" typical isn't as special a deer.
A 200 has to have 31" of extras to NOT have a 170" typical frame already...
More than likely he's going to have a bigger frame than the 170 anyway...
Why is this even a question?
I mean... I could see... a 190 typical vs a 200 non-typ... but 170?
Doesn't make sense. Anyone here sick of shooting 200's yet?
I bet there are a few on here that are sick of shooting 170's.

AmoCuernos, where are you finding all these over plentiful 170 typical free range/low fence bucks?

I dunno... we probably killed 7 or 8 of them in 5 years on our place before the fence went up 5 years later. That was before feed. Now... same deer herd... fed... I think we have killed like 20 deer that NET over 170 typical in 10 years.

Since age isn't a factor on the places we've hunted. (Small properties, shoot what you see type deal) I'd take the non typical. It's on my bucket list, ABOVE trophy. I'm a sucker for NTs.

I wouldn't know they were there until I checked game cameras later due to the fact I probably fell asleep in the stand. So, in turn, nothing would have happened.
If ducks had horns I'd probably be a duck hunter. I am a horrible deer hunter. Probably the worst. Ever.

Good area, used to roll through that way out of Corpus on our way to Roma back in the later 70s as a kid. Saw some good ones back in the day...
