I'm probably wearing out my welcome, but I'm still trying to figure out which way I want to go with a 22LR. I've looked at the 10/22 and the Remington 597. I'm also considering a complete upper in 22LR for my AR. Chiappa makes a very affordable upper that comes with a mag. Has anyone tried these out? Do they function well? Are they accurate? I like shooting the AR, and this might work out well for my son and me.

The cheapest and most economical route is to go to a Walmart that sells guns and either get a beautiful walnut stocked Marlin Model 60 for $157 or a birch stocked 50th anniversary 10/22 for $199. They had both at the McKinney Walmart off Highway 380 this weekend (unless I bought the last 10/22 that is).

A dedicated 22 LR upper is going to cost you 2-3 times that and require you swap out uppers. There are conversion kits you can get for the price of a dedicated 22 rifle that work with an existing .223/5.56 upper but the accuracy and reliability won't be the same thru one of the aforementioned rifles.

As for the uppers, personally I wouldn't want a Chiappa anything..if I were to go the dedicated upper route I'd want CMMG.

I can get the Chiappa complete upper with a 25 rd mag for about $285. That's not much more than a 10/22 in some models (stainless @ Walmart is $260). The CMMG is about $140 more (or more). Price isn't the only factor. I don't want to waste money, but I would buy the Chiappa upper if the general consensus was good. Is your objection from personal experience with the company or their products?

I'm not worried about changing uppers. And frankly, if it worked well I would probably build another lower for it.

It was just an answer from personal opinion/bias. I knew from experience (doing the same thing with a 6.8 SPC upper now - anyone got a complete Rock River lower?!) that going that route probably meant another lower in your future so thought one of the other options would be more cost effective but cost doesn't allways count for everything If you want it, get it!

First, I would get a dedicated separate rifle. An .22LR upper is unnecessarily heavy and expensive for a .22.

I agree with Earl: go snag a Marlin Model 60 or a Ruger 10/22. Both are extremely reliable, affordable, and accurate. They will also be light and handy.

I personally prefer the Model 60 for a field gun because I like the tubular magazine for walking around. But, a 10/22 literally has 1,000's of customization options. And, you can get a reliable 25-rd mag for the 10/22 (Ruger BX-25).

I have a couple of each, you can't lose.

You know, I've resisted buying a 10/22 with all my might, and everyone keeps telling me that's the one to buy. The WM near me has the SS/synthetic model for $259. I should just go buy it. I already own a couple of Ruger firearms, both stainless models, and they are good pieces.

By the way, Earl, TXGUNNER308 has Spikes stripped lowers for $85. That's a pretty good deal to me. I'm going to buy one or 2 from him in the next couple of days.

OK, if you're on the fence, let's raise the stakes a bit. Look at CZ's. I think it's a 597 that I shot new the other day and it was just fine. I am a big 10/22 guy though. That is a better rifle hands down. The only 22lr that will shoot better than my 10/22's is my Win 52.

If you want a cheap, lightweight AR-22 get a poly lower and a Chiappa upper. That's a complete AR-22 for less than $400. The Tac Sol uppers are pricey, but they work like a champ and are very fun to shoot. If you want to personalize your gun at all get a 10/22. If you want a tube fed and want to get a very nice gun that you will have forever, get a Remington 552 Speedmaster. If you want a cheaper tube fed get the Marlin. If you want a bolt action, get a Savage. My 2 cents.

Doc, the Chiappa upper and poly lower is something I was considering. SBR looks very nice.

Cast, I've been looking at the 597's for a while. I like the way they look and feel. I would love to shoot one before I put my money down, though. There are quite a few people telling me they are jam-o-matics in another thread. I think it's just the early models.

On another forum that I frequent, the Chiappa .22 uppers don't get much love. I have a CMMG dedicated upper, whole rifle actually, and it works great. I recently bought a better-mag adapter that allows me to use the S&W M&P 15-22 magazines and provides the bolt hold open function after the last shot. the prices on CMMG dedicated uppers and rifles have went up though.

I bought my son a S&W M&P 15-22. It is lightweight, but it works exactly like my AR-15. My son loves it, but I would say that it is probably a 3 MOA gun... great for plinking, but not as accurate as others.
