How do u rate it? Doing a meat hunt next Monday and Tuesday for a couple and we are looking to put some good meat in the freezer. We ran out of whitetail and axis all we have tried is axis, niliga, and white tail. How does it compare?

Beats whitetail hands down. Close call with Axis but it is delicious. A lot like elk.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

It's a little stronger (in a good way) than whitetail but not as beefy as moose.

As far as I'm concerned, axis is about the best meat that grows on Earth... But all of the cervids have meat that is of a very similar character. In other words, there just aren't any deer that you should turn your nose up at and, furthermore, if you have the opportunity to stock your freezer with red deer primal cuts then you should definitely do so. I completely agree with passthru that it's similar to elk.

Since its a sub species of the Elk, you can expect it to taste similar to elk taken in Texas. I like it better than WT. Not better than Nilgai, Axis, or Scimitar Oryx. Better than fallow. Better than wild hog.

I have killed and eaten both Nilgai and Red Stag this past year imo I think the red stag is a shade better.

Mostly what I eat is red hind and fallow doe and I love them, the best I've eaten though hands down was chital (axis).

It is hard to beat a red yearling hind though!

I prefer meat in it's original packaging.
