If anyone has a morsel of info regarding hunting in the area I would appreciate it. I have been hunting west Texas for seven years, and know it will be a change of scenery. Right now I am mainly worked about snakes and gators, which are two things I don't worry about right now. I would prefer a PM on this issue in case a location is discussed or a body of water is accidentally named. By all means I am not looking for a hand out, just a place to start. Information on deer hunting and areas to purchase land are appreciated in advance.
Thanks

Do you want to deer hunt, duck hunt, or both?

I've seen some good deer come from north of there but its a property by property basis. Plenty of duck hunting around the area. Snakes any gators aren't too bad.

Thanks for the info. I am into all game. Preference is for birds but when pressure is high I will shoot a deer or two. I shot this one this year on public after several extremely disappointing duck hunts. Even went after quail and rabbits.

Arise.Kill.Eat -Acts 10:13 I have read a bunch of stuff on the internet about Star Wars but that does not mean I can skin a deer with a light saber.

There's lots of marsh down there, you won't have too much problem finding ducks.

Lots of APH public land for waterfowl in the book around Orange. National refuges nearby. The state park. The big thicket allows retriever dogs now, and I would not rule out checking into the public stuff on Louisiana side just over the border. Being close to Murphree it would be a good opportunity for gator hunting. There are enough hunt dates on the gator hunts there that I am sure you could get on one of them by standby every year.

I am moving to Orange. I have one question, will I need 4x4 for hunting. I would like to trade my 4x4 f150 in for something better on gas and would consider a 4x2 if i won't use 4x4.
Thanks

I use my four wheel drive almost every time I go hunting down here. That is mostly on private land though. I've never hunted any public stuff around here but would imagine you could access quite a bit of it in 2 wheel drive.

Did I read that right? You want to trade in your 4WD for a 2WD? I think Macys has a sale going on right on purses you can buy with the gas money you save.
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

Oh keep your 4x4 that's swampy country. Also the fishing is great. Flounder, specks and lots of reds

That's funny, I don't want to trade 4x4 for 4x2, but if it is all asphalt then I wouldn't see the point. I will be looking at another 4x4. Thanks for all the info. I am very excited for the career change and some water.

This area is no different than any other area. 90%+ of the places you can access in a 2x4.

Too bad no one has figured out 1/2 ton diesel truck with good mileage. You will want the 4x4 around Orange.

If you're an outdoorsman then you will enjoy that area of SE Texas. I grew up in neighboring Jefferson County, but worked in the Orange area (closer to Little Cypress) for several years. Feel free to PM with any specific questions.
