Question about cutting a 270 barrel down. It's a Remington 700 with a 24" barrel. What would the effects be if I had it cut down and crowned to 22" or even 20"? Accuracy, velocity? Really just looking for answers, I'll have it cut down by Morgan at DSS and recrowned.

Accuracy likely no change or a possible improvement.
You will loose some velocity, but unless your into long range shooting it will likely not be noticed.

Definitely not long range shooting really just to make it more handy. Just wondering if I'll really notice a difference shooting maybe out to 200 or so yards.

Accuracy will most likely improve or at least stay the same as a shorter barrel is "stiffer" than a long barrel of the same weight. for 200 yards and in game will not notice the difference between 20 inch and 24 inch barreled 270, what the shooter will notice is increased muzzle blast from a handier rifle.

Your going to lose about 30 fps per inch of barrell you take off
It's also going to make it loud as hell
Just buy a .308 with a short barrell
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Once you have a 20" barrel it's hard to look back.

No big deal. The 270 win is not a real long range gun anyway. Cut it and enjoy. I bet if you get a good crown on it it may be a better shooter. I see a lot of remmys with sloppy crowns.

The brake is a waste on a .270 at any length.

Possibly because 270's are not specially known for being heavy recoiling guns. You can break it and it will reduce felt recoil, but couple the short barrel with a break and it is going to be a LOUD mama jamma! You will not be able to fire it without plugs or muffs. If you do your ears will likely give out shortly.

But them you end up worse off as you have an even longer rifle than you started with. I second everything. ...cutting it wont give you issues but I also say leave it and buy a short rem 700 in 308

I wouldn't do it on a 270 for two reasons, velocity loss and loss in value. I've got 24 and 26 inch barrels on most of my rifles and they handle fine. Had you said 7mm08 or 308 I wouldn't have a problem but the 270 was built for speed and I wouldn't hobble it.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
