I have never been a shotgun guy but recently realized that with my schedule the only way I'm spending any time in the woods with my kids is if I take advantage of public land and that means I hunt with a shotgun now. I want to hunt turkey and varmints with the same gun. Will a camo gun really help? Are there any guns that I should specifically avoid? Are open sights better than beads? Is anyone using a scope or some other kind of optics?

First pick a brand you can get barrells and extra chokes fairly easily like remington or mossburg and i would pay the extra money for a camo gun. Then i would get a slug barrell or rifled choke for the gun for deer or hog hunts and make sure the reciever is drilled and tapped. My rem 870 sps turkey gun workes great for hogs and turkey and has adjustable fiber optic sights and was drilled and tapped from the factory and ready for a scope if i want. Big Daddy stick to a 12, ammo is easier to get and cheaper and a 12 gauge 3.5 in mag is comparable to a 10 gauge and will flatten just about anything!

I got a Rem 870 Express supermag. The 3 1/2" mags in that gun kill on both ends. You can usually pick one up used for around $250. Camo is nice but not necesary in my opinion. I use an after market fiber optic sight on it for turkeys. The next thing I want to purchase for it is a slug barrell. Some have iron sights and some have rear offset scope mount built into the barrell. I like the idea of this one. That way my scope would stay mounted to my slug barell when I switch out barrells for turkey season. It's only money.

Mossberg 835 ulti-mag is what I have. Its a great gun and you can get barrells and chokes for it anywhere. And go with a 12ga that will go up to 3.5, although I never shoot the 3.5, I usually just shoot the 3 inch shells. Cant go wrong with Remi or Mossberg
