As a beginner to hunting, would you recommend I go with an electronic call or a hand call? The electronic seems like it would be way easier and I hear a lot of people sing their praises, but I hear people say that hand calls are more realistic therefore they are better. Which do you prefer and why? Should I take the time to learn to use hand calls or get an electric and be done with it? or Both?

I would say that you would need both. E-callers come w/such a broad library of sounds, and when it comes to e-callers, I would say get the very best that you can afford. I keep a Haydel's Govt. model hand call attached to my vest to use in case I happen across a critter that hasn't yet seen me. I just sit down and use the rabbit or the squeak to try and call him in. Go with both. Sometimes lowering the volume on a ecaller and blowing a mouth call at the same time is a recipe for success.

Try a hand call, after your first outing you'll know the real reason everyone goes to e-callers unless your a practiced bugler or bass horn player. Been calling critters for over 40 yrs. started with hand calls moved up to k-mart cassette player and now e-callers. They all worked, the electronics just keep it from being work.

Hand calling and e-callers are equal on the level of success, however the hand calls seem to offer a greater level of satisfaction when you get one in.

I use them together. While calling with the ecaller, I sporadically add different sound with a different volume level with a hand call. I have had coyotes come in during these times. Stopping the hand call allows the coyote to focus his attention on the ecaller sound still playing, and not straight at me.

So I picked up a couple of hand calls at lunch today, I sound horrible lol. I cant imagine anything coming in to that! I figured I'd go ahead and start practicing hand calls until I can save the money for an e-caller, I'll just say I've got lots of practicing to do!
