I have a couple hundred 168 Bergers. Once the 162 A-maxes become available I will be procuring quite a bit of them.

You shouldn't ream it out with that reamer. What happens when you have 7mm-08 brass, and not 308 necked down? Can't be good for shooting sub MOA.

I won't have 7mm-08 brass; I don't want another specialty damn case, got to many as it is and 308 will always be available, not to mention i have over 1000 new pieces now. So there.

Ah ha! Well when I got out of the 308 business I sold all my brass. Sooooo, I'll be buying 7-08 brass. Sorry you have to buy the reamer all by yourself. So there.

I bought my wife a 7mm08 and I am hoping to find an effective load for NM elk and mule deer. I was considering something in the area of 150gr Hornady Interlock's or maybe ballistic tips, but FiremanJG mentioned 162gr. I wonder what the effective range and accuracy would be on something like that? I am hoping for at least 300 to 400 yards. I'm not loading yet but the dies are on the way from what I understand.

Xman,
The effective range depends on what you're shooting at. 300-400 yards is a chip shot for a 7mm-08. In the short action category, It is a major contender in thousand yard shooting

I hunted elk this year in the Jarbidge country of Nevada. I was carrying a .300 WM but didn't pop a cap because I saw no bulls big enough to interest me.
But a lady in camp with me had also drawn in the same unit, and she was toting a 7mm-08 built up on a custom Husky action. Her husband had reloaded 160 gr Nosler Partitions behind a moderate load of Re-19. I don't recall the amount of powder he was loading, but the velocity was just short of 2700 fps, he said.
On the last morning, she nailed a 320-class 6x6 at some 260 yards. They said the stricken elk just stood there a couple seconds, looking a little perplexed, and just as she was about to hammer him again, the bull took one step and fell on its nose. By the time they got to the elk, it was dead from a double-lung shot that exited the far side of the bull.
One shot, one elk. Sounds like good bullet performance to me. By the way, I have also taken 2 bulls with the 160 NPT, but with a 7mm RM.

Considering I am mobility impaired disabled Veteran, I doubt we'll be shooting any extreme distances. After we shoot it, we have to get to it and bring it back. But it sounds to me like I am on the right track. I would prefer 155-160 gr as a minimum. I also have a FNH 308 Special police rifle with a Shepherd V2 scope I'll be shooting. Long range shots with that set up is routine. I hit 5 out of 5 at 780 yard 10"steel with 168 Match. But then it would be my luck that I would have to go down a ravine 150 yards away, across a wash 400 yards and then back up the other side 200 yards at 30 degrees with another 500 yards to go to get to my kill.

Well, you won't be under gunned with a 7-08. I killed my elk with a 180 gr Berger this year. It came out of a 7 Rem Mag, and one shot is all it took. I expect the 168 Berger to be just the ticket in the 7mm-08.
I know what you mean about hauling the animal out, and I'm perfectly healthy. It was an epic journey for myself and my 2 hunting partners to haul my elk out of where he was downed. If I was within 50 miles of you I'd say give me a call and I volunteer to get an animal out for you.

If Drew gets back on here he has been killing a lot of stuff with his 7-08 He uses berger 168s...with a good kick of varget the thing hammers. Impact on steel is noticibly harder then my 260 was at 300 + yards. He knocked down that 300lb (estimated) pig at around 300 yards. Big pig

The last 2 years I've ran the 162gr Amax without any issues. I've taken game out to 400 yards with no issues. I've been trying to score a box of the 150 gr LRAB as they are said to fly almost spot on with dope of the 162gr Amax. The 162gr only failed to exit on one animal, a +200 lbs pig on a quartering shot but did break the off shoulder so I wouldn't feel under gunned with them on a elk hunt.

Have carried the 7mm-08 elk hunting but didn't get the chance to use it on that hunt. In 32 years and well over 100 animals with the 7mm-08 have never seen a reason not to trust it for an game within reasonable range and using a good bullet. For elk I would go with 150 or 160 grain bullets in either Accubond, Sirocco or partition and shots inside 400 yards.
Dee that LRA sounds interesting, will be glad if Nosler ever catches up so we can get some a good supply of LRAs. I have some 150gr sirocco's loaded and read to try, haven't used them on animals yet.

It's handy we have an endless supply of hogs to use as ballistic gel, for testing.

Hopefully I'll be successful in the New Mexico draw for mobility impaired elk. I'll definitely be looking closer to the road or clearings for my kill.

It does not seem to me that a 180 gr in a 7mag is going to be the same as one in a 7-08? Am I wrong about this. I'm thinking in the concept of 300WinMag vs .308 Win. Both are .30 calibers but the effects are drastically different down range I think.

You are exactly correct in your thinking. And the 308 vs. 300 Win Mag/ 7-08 vs. 7 Rem Mag is the appropriate comparison. Look up the BC for a 168 gr. Berger go to jbmballisics.com plug all that in with a 2700 fps muzzle velocity. Then look up the BC of a 180 gr. Berger go to jbm and plug in everything with a 2950 fps muzzle velocity. That will tell the tale.
Compare it to pick-ups.
7mm-08 = 1/2 ton 280 Rem = 3/4 ton 7 Rem Mag = 1 ton
