I use a canoe to duck hunt and recently got a trolling motor, small deep cycle battery and charger. I am wanting to know the best way to store the battery in order to prolong its life. Do I keep it on the charger? It has a "float" setting. Should I discharge the battery? Any advice is appreciated.

My apologies, I wasn't clear. I store it in my garage. I was wondering if it should be stored on the charger, fully discharged, fully charged, or does it really matter?

Don't let it go dead... especially in the cold it could ruin the battery. Ideal is to keep a trickle cell charger like 1amp on it after you use it... or just charge it and take it off... but if you don't use it for a while charge it again before you use it.. main thing is don't run it all the way dead while using it...

If your charger does have a float charge mode plug it in and forget about it till you need it. I had a fishing rig that had a Minnkota 6 amp with float mode and the battery was still in good shape after 6 years or use, the battery was either on the lake being used or plugged in at the house.

A Battery Tender is what you need. Under 20 bucks.

Yes.... Battery tender. Make sure it is a 12 volt one. They make them for both 12 volt and 6 volt batteries.

I'm guessing the float mode is similar or the same to a battery tender? Again, thank you all.

Battery Tender is way smarter than a big charger set on low. You can leave it hooked up for years in storage and it will maintain the battery for you. I've got them on everything.
