Where are the real hot spots this year?
Lots of birds in and around Abilene, however I was in Colorado City near Lake Champion and observed seven coveys in less than a mile going down a county road.
The birds were feeding in the barditches.
Coveys ranged in size from 14 to apprx. 30 birds per covey. Best area I have seen so far.
Rattlesnakes are out and moving with the cooler weather, two in the last three days.

We have a lease south of Wellington, TX. Saw three coveys with over 50 birds and one covey with approximately 100 birds, although I do believe that the big covey was two combined. We used to have a lease outside of San Angelo and the biggest covey that we ever saw was 10 birds. The game warden said that there were 3 hatches this year. I can not believe the number of birds that we are seeing. We saw all of these coveys on about a half mile of road. Also, saw quite a few smaller coveys with 10 to 30 birds.

evrywhere oughtta be you're hotspots this year! If you've killed quail there before you're gonna have tons of them. If you've never seen quail there before you're prolly gonna see a few. From what I've heard and seen there oughtta be birds everywhere this year. Take advantage boys, they'll be gone before you know it.

In the Snyder/Gail area, I have seen 5 covey in less than an hour, all with 15+ birds in each.
Should be a great season.

In Childress during a few dove hunts I was seeing 5 to 7 coveys an afternoon. Never went out in the AM cause I was on vacation and wanted to sleep in.

I have heard that Motley and Cottle Co, have a bunch of birds this year as does Young....both places I can go...Then in Dimmit, where I will be doing a lot of deer hunting this year, we have gobs of quail...mostly bobs, but enough blues to make it fun.....

Just an FYI for you. we opened a hunting lodge about 10-15 minutes outside of Wellington this year. very comfortable, affordable lodge--meals included. it is on 80 acres, secluded. we do raise and have released some bobwhites. hunters are welcome to hunt a few quail during the stay (no extra charge) we are mainly trying to give hunters who have leases, etc. a choice besides a motel. thanks and happy hunting! Jeff / Bird Dog,
Do ya'll hunt around the Childress area? If so, where? I've got some family land about 10 miles north of Paducah. The bobwhites are thick right now. But we usually hold off on quail hunting until everyone has taken their deer for the season.

Second weekend of the season, lots of bobwhites in the sandhills around Sundown and Lehman, Texas. Conditions were much better for the bird dog this weekend. Snow during the week last week provided some left over moisture for the dogs to work with. Still to warm to work them past lunch time, but the birds are there in numbers to provide great hunting and a lot of work for the dogs. Saw a Huge Buck Mule Deer near Plains, Texas bedded down in tumbleweeds out in the plains. Never observed a deer in 40 years of hunting in this area until Saturday.

We had a great weekend of hunting as well near Gail. Lots of bobs and the dogs were flat wore out from laying around all off-season.

Conditions were much better on Sunday, than on Friday. Saw several covey's of 40+ birds.

Hi Guy,
This is a great forum. I live the Fort Worth area and I am new to quail hunting in Texas. I have an 18 month old Weim that needs a lot of birds. Are all of the HOTSPOTS you are talking about on leased land or are they on private/public land?

Brad

Just got back from my lease just south of Colorado City. Birds everywhere. Dogs did great, I should have gotten in better condition. Off to Kansas Wednesday morning for a five day hunt.

GT...the spots I am talking about are private lands. Hard to find good, public quail anywhere near the metroplex. Haven't ever tried the grasslands, but I imagine they've got some birds this year.
Shoot me a PM and I'll try to give you some hints.

Went to Van Horn last weekend for blues. That country is grown up mor than it has been in I'm guessing 50 years. We saw lots of birds just hard to spot with all the vegetation.
