My dad is wanting to get into bow hunting and asked me to help him out.
We are not concerned with competitive shooting or speed, etc.
It will be a less than 30 yard hunting bow. Went to cabelas looked at the Diamond bows they cary, sales guy said they were good bang for your buck, very adjustable and came ready to shoot with a rest similar to a wisker biscut but different.
Anyone have any experience with these bows?
Thanks
matt

I love diamond bows, I've owned two
I get mine from mesquite archery over on 410 and Bandera. Scott is infinatly more knowledgeable anyone at a big box store.
Bass pro also carries diamond bows and I believe the redhead bows are made by bowtech, who owns diamond. John at bass pro is very knowledgeable but I won't let anyone besides him touch my bow
I would just go to mesquite and shoot a bunch of different bows

Btw the rests suck that they come with
Take it off right away and get a QAD drop away.

I sold Diamonds for about 6 years. They are a helluva single cam bow. Manufactured out of the same location and by the same people with the same materials as bowtech. Great company with a great product. IMO I would try to find a good quality, used, black ice. Or my favorite, an Iceman. Those are the superior Diamond bows and you can't go wrong with either one. A new set of quality strings and it will be lights out.
I regret selling my Iceman all the time.

And to reiterate what txtrophy said, those hostage rests are crap.

I love my iceman. I might buy another bow but I'm keeping that one for life
Not a speed demon but a smoother bow there never was

matt Go to several bow shops and handle and shoot a lot of different bows until one finds you (your dad). Lots of good bows out there these days.

And never take advice from someone at Cabela's about a bow.
Go to a proshop and do your research there.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

Agreed with points made above. Don't trust a guy behind the counter at Cabelas or any box store for that matter. Go to different shops and see what is out there in your price range. yo can get quality used bows fully rigged for a good price at some shops and in the classified section on here too.

Before buying any bow be sure and have your dad measured correctly for proper draw length. There is no need for him to buy a 30" bow if his full draw is at 28" Go to a trusted archery pro shop for proper advice

You have one of the best bow shops in Texas in your neck of the woods: The Bow Shop on Naco Perrin. Most helpful guy I've ever met.

It will go to a local shop for tuning, but the bow will come from cabelas and likely get a different rest. Thanks to all.

You should have told us that in the first place.
IMO you can't go wrong with diamond.
Just don't buy the cheapest bow they make

A few bows to look at in Cabela's is the Instigator, made by Bowtech using the Infinite edge riser and limbs though the limbs are a little different than on the infinite edge. the big difference between the Instigator and Infinite edge is in the cam and string/cables. Several have written about how smooth and nice Iceman bows are, the Instigator uses the same single cam, makes for a smooth shooting light weight bow. the Diamond core is the same rice and is a little faster but IMO not as smooth as the Instigator. the other Diamond at Cabela's the last time I looked was the Outlaw which is a larger and faster bow just not quite as smooth as the 2 above, less forgiving wall is what I remember about it.
the Hostage rests that come on Diamond bows should be replaced with either a Ripcord or QAD drop away rest IMO.
If the Cabela's you visit have any Strothers bows still on the rack, that will be the smoothest shooting bow in the store. the Wrath SHO is a very smooth, fast and long brace height bow making it forgiving to shoot. Some stores still have that bow in stock and it is on clearance for about 100 off.
When buying a bow from an store be it big box or bow shop, if you know what a well fitted bow should feel like and you know good shooting form, the fit should be easy for about an decent bow tech to fit you with a new bow. the setup of the bow to length and weight is not hard to do on most of todays bows, what separates the good techs from the not so good ones is the setup and tuning of a bow and getting the shooter to understand what good shooting form is and what to work on for good shooting form. A bow can shoot bullet holes on paper tuning for one shooter and large tares in the paper for another shooter that torques the bow differently through grip, ill fitting release or use of the release/anchor point.....

Get the best bow you can afford. Also do some research on bows and shoot them. I am also a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I like Mathews, I am comfortable shooting Mathews and I will never own another other than a Mathews bow. Good luck

Diamonds are good bows. I'd recommend going to a proshop and shoot a bunch and as if they have any of last years models still in stock. My dad and I got great deals by picking up brand new '13 bows since the '14s were on the shelf

Compound bows today are way better than even 5 years ago. 10 years ago, you had to go to a pro-shop to find a good bow...not today. If you want the smoothest and quietest, PSE Evo, Strothers Wrath, Matthews, etc are awesome and you will pay over $1k after it is all said and done. Or, you can go with the main line PSE, Diamonds, Bear, etc and get over 300 fps, which is plenty fast today and 100 years from now for under $500 (tags/taxes/title!). If you wait till April, Diamond (and every one else) are coming out with their new bows for 2014. The older models will be reduced at great prices. The difference between 10 years ago compound and todays main line compounds are like going from SD Tv to 720P. Going from today's mainline bows to pro-line bows is like going from 720P to 1080P. I hope you can get my analogy.

Bought my son a Diamond Core for Chrsitmas. He has already drilled a decent buck, doe, and hog with it. I dont know how many times he has shot the bow in the last six weeks, but we will be replacing the string and rest. I enjoy watching him shoot it. It is fast and accurate.
