I've seriously thought about building a 7.62x39 AR because ammo is cheap and it's a decent round. But it seems there's way more cons than pros. Too many modifications required (firing pin, springs, buffer), hit or miss magazines, and the big one...broken bolts. I can deal with everything but the bolt issue.

Believe me, I really want a 7.62x39 AR but when I look at the hassle and the price of AKs coming down....just can't do it.

I have put 1k's of STEEL cased rounds thru mine, never had a problem with it.
It really likes Wolf 154 grain SP.

What kind of bolt are you using out of curiosity?

The bolt issue has been solved by better quality bolts. If you buy a quality bolt you won't have the lugs break (same reason you don't hear about 50 Beowulf bolts breaking which is the same bolt face as 7.62x39)
The round doesn't require any special spring or buffer - just the bolt, slightly longer firing pin and C-Products, AR Stoner or ASC magazines to feed right.

I ran about the harshest setup possible with the round, a 7.5" barrel on my SBR. I never had a problem with it running a standard CAR buffer and spring and cheap steel cased ammo.

Good to go. I love mine. Its an Oly Arms 16" SS bull barrel and its super accurate with the cheap steel cased ammo. Zero issues. Don't listen to the nay sayers.

Where are you guys finding quality bolts? I read that AR performance and LMT are no longer making bolts.

I'm running a Lewis Machine & Tool bolt in mine. Zero problems. They are no longer sold on the website, but if you call and ask they still have "lot's of them". It's not cheap at $150, but three "regular" bolts that fail after 500 rounds isn't cheap either.

Any trigger group with a full-power hammer spring and an enhanced firing pin will work for berdan primed ammunition.

I had some issues related to inexperience, but since I figured out where my (minor) problems were it has been smooth sailing.

To me, it's objective that there are not more cons than pros - but it depends on your objectives and whether you are set up to load for .300 BO. For a handloader, there are a lot more options with the .308 bullet than the .311, a lot more options for brass and you can slap any old 5.56 BCG in there. If you're not a handloader, then the .300 BO isn't any easier or cheaper and any savings during the build will QUICKLY be eclipsed by ammunition costs.

Yep, any reports of issues with feeding, extracting or overall poor function have been drastically exaggerated...

You have to call LMT. They'll sell you one over the phone.

You can also buy a 6.5 Grendel / .264 LBC ARP Bolt and remove a couple thousandths from the tail of the bolt.

Cason Engineering also sells a redesigned bolt for 7.62x39. There are some anecdotes that these are working out, but I don't know anything about them otherwise. As much as I like LMT, this may be a better value since they will support their current-run product. With LMT if you, for example, lose one of those little springs under the lobster tail extractor while you're cleaning it - well, you're going to have to buy a new bolt.

A co-worker has had very negative experiences with the MGI 7.62x39 bolt and, particularly, the MGI customer/product support, FWIW.

Sorry been out of the radar for a little while. My 7.62x39 bolt is a stock Model 1 sales. My Beowulf is Alexander Arms bolt, and my Grendel bolt came with my Saber defence barrel. (don't know who they use) i have not had any bolt failures in any of my ARs. I have put a few rounds down range since my first one in 1986.

Out of curiousity, is your 7.62x39 barrel a 20" with rifle gas?

My AR upper is also from Model 1 Sales. When I bought it around 3 years ago, I was told that it was RTG with the necessary bolt and firing pin. I bought some C-Products mags, and the rest is history.

It shoots every brand of 7.63x39 I've fed it. Steel cases, brass cases, it don't matter. I like the Herters 154 SP best for pigs. I have some Russian 122 gr SP of uncertain manufacture that also works well. If you can accept 3 MOA, as the pigs do, you'll be happy.

It's a fine rifle for sorting out a sounder of hogs. I have also found that even the C-Mags can jam if you try to fill them to the max. That's OK because I prefer 5-10 rounds in my AR. Shooters that have to pay for their own ammo quickly become selective shooters. Youngsters of high school and college age who shoot ammo bought by their daddys are the ones that blaze away with 30-rd and 50-rd mags.

If those boys had to pay for their own ammo, they wouldn't pop one cap!

My 7.62x39 has been my deer rifle now for 3-4 years. Between me and my buddy that's on the lease we have taken 9 or ten. We shoot MFS 123SP and we shoot lots of brass. Both guns feed nice with ASC 10 round mags

What brand of barrel and bolt are you using?

No one makes 20rd mags do they? That would be a good middle ground between the tiny 10 rounders and goofy looking 30rd ones

After a few thousand rounds through my sota arms 7.62x39 no problems. It loves brass, MFS Bi-metal and steel cases. Only mags I use are ASC. They just flat work!

Exact same thing here. Thousands of rounds of Russian steel and no issues. Very accurate...

I built one with ARP components. After I put a Model 1 firing pin in all my troubles were solved.
