This post should probably go under a different topic but I wanted to post it here to generate a quicker discussion.

I've seen guys who try to blame their miss of a deer on "bad ammo". It seems the second most common excuse with the first being "someone must have bumped my scope", or "I must have dropped my gun."

So then, just how likely would it be for someone to end up with bad ammo? And what is the shelf life for ammo that is kept dry?

It is classified as being unwilling to admit to "Operator Error".

Many folks, have a problem admitting to the fact that in real life they are not as proficient with their firearms as they claim to be on the site.

Then, instead of just not coming on here and saying anything about just flat arse missing an animal, they want the sympathy/excuse ploy to come into play.

It is just human nature to try and find or fabricte reasons why something that happened was anything but personal shortcomings. JMO.

i've missed but it was due to the humidity and wind conditions and the buck was to close to the stand at 25 yards and i had it sighted in at 500.

I've actually heard of guys who never got off a shot because the deer was so close, they couldn't focus on it in their scope.

Brethern, let us not forget the dreaded, metallic "click" of a safety being released. Perhaps nothing has led more to the continued longitivity of mature bucks. It even cost me a very nice gobbler one Spring morning in Mississippi.

I have lots of surplus ammo for my older military rifles and it still works fine. I have some 8mm mauser ammo from the 40's that works perfect. I think it helps to store it in a cool dry place too.

There is no excuse for "bad ammo". You should never, ever hunt with ammo without first firing a few rounds through your rifle to insure it groups and also to watch for pressure, although you will most likely never see any issues with pressure from factory ammo.
I've heard all kinds of excuses before. It was said by someone else, its ego. Those people don't want to admit to failure. I've missed two animals before, both pigs. And I'm still not entirely sure that one was a miss. I was shooting a 7mm-08 with handloaded Ballistic tips. First pig I shot broadside, and this is the one I believe was dead on. There was a lot of grass in front of it though and I think that might have deflected it. It was at about 150 yds. Second pig I have no excuse for. I was shooting off bipods on top a truck and had plenty of time to do my breathing and get a good shot off. But I missed. I don't know how or why but I did. Oh well.

Oh yeah and shelf life is a long time. Most of the ammo we used in Iraq was made around 1983.

blah blah blah! you should shoot your ammo 19 times before hunting. Leaving you with 1. Make it a good 1!

My dad used some old ammo and it sounded bad, just one bullet out of the box, may have been a bad primer, I dunno

Operator error will cover most of the problem. Properly stored ammo will last almost indefinitely, the military is a good example. As already stated above he was shooting ammo made in 1983. In Vietnam we had ammo dated back to WWII, even some of the food was old, C-Rats dated from the Korean war. The ammo worked and the food had the same chitty taste.

In 1997 I took my son out one morning he was 13yrs old at the time.He was shooting my 3006 and had rem core lock 165gr bullets . He shot the cull spike I told him to shoot hit it rt in the shoulder. The bullet blew up just a big skin wound . this was from 50yds out.The spike ran across the field and stoped I shot him with hornady 2506 and droped him. In looking at the wound the core lock did not go threw the shoulder. I took close up pics but never did send it to rem. I have never bought rem ammo since.

I gut shot a buck once, after getting the deer a 3 hour adventure, we went to check the zero I shot the deer at 150yds and when we check the rifle it was just over four inches off at 50yds I was suprised I even hit the deer. The rifle was dead on two weeks prior to that hunt I guess I should have check my zero when we got to the place I was hunting but it was a small place and I thought it would spook the deer

Ordinarily, I would say that bad ammo is a myth.

However ...

Yesterday I was at the range re-zeroing a familiar rifle and I has some unexplained flyers that were fully six to eight inches to the left of my point of aim (I'm right-handed). I was very disturbed by this and checked my scope mounts, stock screws, etc., but found nothing wrong. It was the very end of the box, so I shot up the last couple of rounds, then opened a new box.

The problem disappeared completely with the new box. I hammered dead center on every shot ...

What brand of ammo syncerus?

Bassackwards, everyone I know uses core-lokt. I've never seen a round do that. That's very odd.

I got a bad box of ammo for a .223 (ultramax), my nephew pulled the trigger 4 times on one deer and 3 times on another... switched boxes and all have shot, went back to the other box and had the same thing happen again... luckily we have deer on the lease that will stick around to hear the "click" that many times. As far as missing one and blaming it on the ammo..... better have gullible huntin' buddies.
