I'm looking at getting on a deer lease just north of Throckmorton. It will be a long drive from Houston, but my wife's family lives in Ft. Worth, so I'm hoping it will make it easier for me to get to the lease, even though its farther away than my current place in Medina County.
Can anyone give me their thoughts on how that party of the state compares to Meinda County? Pics would be awesome. I've heard the hunting can be really great or really terrible up there.
Thanks in advance!

North of Throckmorton should have good numbers of deer, with the occasional very good buck. Hunting pressure on your place and the surrounding places will have a large impact. I hunted a couple of years on some Spade Ranch lease property close to be Brazos and always saw some deer. I did kill a buck in the high 140s, biggest that I saw and only one was killed bigger (just a little bigger). Oh yeah, lots of pigs and decent turkey numbers. PM me if you want some insight on a lease broker named Ray, if that is who you are dealing with.

Throckmorton is hit and miss. I have some buddies that hunt on 14k acres near there and kill 150's every year. Have another buddy that hunts on 1200 acres and is lucky to see a mature buck and has killed one over 130 in 13 years. But the same can be said for just about any area in Texas...

Game management of the property and more importantly surrounding properties will dictate the quality. The genetics are definitely out there. Quite a few nice Throckmorton bucks were photo'd on the THF this past season as proof.

Sounds consistent with what I've heard. The place I'm looking at is 4,000 acres so I'm thinking I should be good as long as the group I'm with is like minded on managment.

It can be very good. Pretty much just mesquite pastures. Not much in the way of hills or scenic beauty. Beauty is in the eyes of the deer-holder, however.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

Hit and miss as stated above. I am on 2K acres north of town and just finished up my 3rd year out in Throckmorton. There are some nice ones, not great #s, they go very dormant early and feed mostly at night. Bow season or cold late season weather is the best time to get one. I did harvest this 125" 8 pt the day after Thanksgiving. Had better ones on camera, just never saw them.
All ready

300J, sounds a lot like Young county buddy. Lots of nice ones early then once the bullets fly, they tend to go rather nocturnal.

I hunted there for years. Hunted North of there, on a ranch associated with the Spade, and it was horrible.
Hunted West of there and it was GREAT.
That's just hunting....

That area was as hit hard by the drought, there is no telling, a lot of good bucks were lost.

Really was hoping for this guy, but he broke his brows during the rut. And a good up and comer!
