Anyone ever deer/hog hunt with a shotgun using a rifled slug barrel? Thoughts? Accuracy? I might have an opportunity to do some deer hunting next season where the landowner only allows bow, no high-powered rifles, but might consider allowing shotguns with slugs. So, I have a 12 ga Remington Magnum shotgun now with the normal vent ribbed barrel and choke tubes. Rather than using that barrel, I am considering purchasing a rifled barrel fot it plus scope. Most shots here will be less than 65 yards with 30-40 yds not uncommon due to the dense brush.

I've seen them as accurate as 1.5" at 100 yards. Something I'd do was buy several types of ammo and try them at say 75 yards to pattern them

your going to be 65 yards or less, buy some slugs and see what the barrel you have will do
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting.......holy kaka.....What a Ride!

I love hunting with my Slug Gun, its a 11-87 with a 21" fully rifled cantilever barrel. I can put 5 slugs into under 2 in at 100 yards all day long with the Remington 12ga 3" accutips. The only thing I would suggest is if your going to use a scope, get something with long eye relief, cause a slug gun can bite you real fast.

I have an 1100 with the original Hastings barrel designed for foster slugs. The newer barrels, designed for sabots, are more accurate but I get 2" groups at 50 yards with Brenneke XP slugs and 3" with Federal foster type slugs. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot out to 100 yds.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I shoot a new england 20 gauge rifled single shot. I can get 2 inch groups at a hundred yards. Have killed several deer with it. One at 190 yards.

Slugs only in MI where I hunt deer. It works fine. For a rifled barrel i prefer Hornady. Have shot a few deer and have never had to track more then 20 yards. All my shots however have been from 50 yards or under but those Sabots will do the trick. Smooth bore barrel for rifled slugs also works for close range but they do not have the long range boom a sabot slug has. I was hitting 2 inch grooves from 100 yards out of my fully rifled H&R Slugster.
