Took my ar to the range first time today..put first mag in pmag... Was loaded with Tula ammo shot first round the casing did not come out.. I racked it shot again and thing... I lubed it up someone shot 15 more rounds with something happening... That point I switched mags and to brass ammo... Shot 5 rounds it FTf one time and then did not lock bolt back on last round... I ended up shooting 100 rounds down it and thur half way thur the mags it would not pick up a round but the bolt started to stay open when mag was empty... So the issue I left with is that sometimes it doesn't pick up a round any ideas??? I used new pmag and steel mags

Sounds to me like a gas issue. Make sure your gas tube is clean and clear. Make sure your gas block is lined up over the gas port in the barrel correctly.

What brand is it? Was it built by a company or individual? I would say it's the Tula ammo I had exact same problem with my spikes, but only with that ammo.

Most guns need broken in first before they will shoot Tula. Fire 200-250 rounds of full power 556 before shooting steel.

Tula is excellent practice ammo, but is weak.

I suspect it's an ammo problem. That Russian stuff causes problems in ar's all the time. I have shot thousands of rounds of ammo through my Colt but if I run one mag of that lacquered case Russian it cooks the lacquer in the chamber. Don't get me wrong, I like cheap ammo too but I leave it for my .223 AK when it comes to Russian ammo.

Try and run some decent brass through it and see if you have a different result. Russian ammo has been a notorious problem child for years in plenty of AR's.

Gas rings on the bolt are all offset? I start with the simple things first. Sorry if you know this.

Were both mags the same brand? I had this issue with Sig polymer mags, I swore up and down it must of been the cheap steel ammo until I changed back to my factory mag. No issues with any other magazines, so I sold the Sig mags on gunbroker about this time last year for about $50 a pop.

One was a pmag and one was Aluminum so don't think they were same brand.

Nothing to do with the buffer if it's not extracting the casing from the chamber. The casing is getting stuck in the chamber on a new gun because the Russian ammo is lacquered and is cooking the lacquer inside the chamber or the newer steel case ammo has expanded just enough to stick. It may clear up after enough rounds are put through and the tolerances lighten up or it may not. My Colt SBR will not shoot the lacquer stuff period.

Tula isn't lacquered. Last I checked Monarch was lacquered, but I agree that the steel cased ammo is causing your FTE.

Here's a review of Brass vs Steel

Read about why Tula doesn't make the full 10k shoot.

In that case I would do what others have said and break it in good with some good ammo. The Russian stuff is known for not being all that consistent and can cause those type of symptoms.

ARs like to run fairly wet. If you don't have some grease on the bearing surfaces of your BCG you can get short stroking with a brand new rifle. I doubt you have anything to worry about, this is probably just an issue related to the break-in period.

About steel-cased ammo: I think it's been disproven that lacquered or polymer coated casings have any effect on the function of the rifle. Steel definitely has different metallurgic properties from brass, however. Brass expands when the charge deflagrates, then "snaps-back" slightly. Steel doesn't expand as much as brass, but it stays at its maximum "blown-out" diameter when fire formed rather than "snapping back". The result is that you don't get the same chamber seal that you get with brass (which CAN make the gun act like it's under gassed), so you can have little bits of carbon deposited between the chamber and the casing and if your chamber has any little rough patches or machining marks the blown-out steel will grab onto them and can require some cajoling to let go. After the chamber has worn-in a bit that shouldn't be as much of an issue.

One other thing, do you have a .223 chamber? The circumferential dimensions are ever-so-slightly smaller with .223 and can exacerbate extraction problems with steel cased ammunition.

Also, ammo from the Tula factory (Wolf, Herters, Tulammo, etc.) has been notorious for inconsistent powder loads. I ran a box of 20 over my chrony and had A LOT of velocity fluctuation, almost 300 fps extreme spread. Some people have blamed detonations on Tula for too little powder in the casing, but I don't know enough about that other than to say I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

If it's not the BCG or the mag, I would check the gas block/tube if more ammo doesn't fix the issue.
