An open top hog trap is allowed on a public hunt. The opening is to allow deer to escape.
Anyone use one? Any problems with hogs getting out too?
Anyone got one to rent or sale?

Only a few units allow trapping for wild hogs and they are by permit only.

Thanks ffread. Interesting approach. I've decided for this short hunt to just go without a trap. I put a camera on a trap once just to see what was going in after I left. I always wired the door open if I was going to leave it for several days. I have pictures of whitetail and axis going in my trap but thankfully it wasn't set at the time. Not looking forward to having to get one of those animals out of a hog trap.

I use figure-6 traps made from cattle panels. Open-top traps a better if there are no corners for them to pile up in. That's how they usually get out, by climbing on top of each other. It also helps if it's a large trap. Doc Higginbotham at A&M used to build traps so big (several acres, from what I've read) that the pigs never really knew they were trapped. If you have cows you will catch a few calves, though.

I had a video cam on my trap when I first set it up to work out the kinks. The first thing they do is try to jump out! My trap is square and luckily it has a top.

I use the open top traps. It is all I will use now. I have in the past used the cage traps. I have had too many deer crippeled from freaking out in them before I can release them. I hate that. Now on the open top traps, mine are about 5.5' tall. Deer can still jump out with little problem. THey usually will leave a streak of hair on the top rail, but still get out. Pigs seldom get out, but im sure if one is determined enough, and is big enough, he can get out. Now like was said before, do not put any corners in it. They will pile up and get out if there are.

We have used the figure 6 traps made from cattle panels aas well and have never had one come over the top. I do remember someone talking about using the figure 6 cattle panel traps and only tying the panels to the t--post about halfway up with the t-posts to the outside. The theory was that if they tried to climb out over the top, the wire would spring back to the inside dumping them back into the pen.
