I have experience hunting pheasant and quail but never chukar. Can anyone give me a comparison, I am considering booking a chukar hunt? Do they get up and fly like pheasant or do they stay low to the ground like quail? Do they run? Thanks

In my experience chukars do not run light pheasants and fly better than most quail . best eating of the three

They get up and fly well. Hold very good for the dogs. My favorite bird when guiding. I assume you're talking about hunting them in Texas... If you're headed to the mountains to hunt them, I think they act a lot differently.

I used to hunt them in nevada in a natural environent they will run first then fly out in nevada they are in the mountains and hang out on cliff edges.you spot and stalk them.i use a chuckar call and wait for a response which could be a mile away I guess what im getting at is your truly not chucker hunting unless your hunting in there natural environment.
99% is showing up

Wild Chukar will run right up the side of a mountain on you and when they flush it is generally straight down hill, low and fast. As the above poster said, if you are hunting them in Texas they will hold fine, but as to how they fly I would think its unpredictable, it is probably the first time they have ever flown more than a few yards.

If you hunt them on a preserve, they usually hold tight and you have to kick them up. Nothing like hunting them in the mountain sides in the North West. Just hope they are flight conditioned.

I have hunted them in Washington, Oregon and Idaho none of which is native environment, they are a introduced species.. Unless I am mistaken and Nevada is part of Eurasia, I think we all hunt them as introduced species.
I would like it if Texas PW introduce them in parts of west Texas that is public as an additional species. They thrive in that type of climate and when quail population are suffering we would at least have the option to hunt them. They are great fun and boy can a dog be proven on them.

Kansas Chukar hunt was a blast. These birds hold really well for pen raised and it took flushing dog to come in and get them up. Once they are up they fly super fast especially downwind. We killed 103 out of 120 on our two hunts and grilled some indirect Sunday. Breasts stuffed with hatch GC and Provolone cheese on pecan wood.
Delish.
