There are no authenticated cases of truly melanistic cougars (pumas). Melanistic cougars have never been photographed or shot in the wild and none has ever been bred. Unconfirmed sightings, known as the "North American black panther", are currently attributed to errors in species identification by non-experts, and by the memetic exaggeration of size. Black panthers in the American Southeast feature prominently in Choctaw folklore where, along with the owl, they are often thought to symbolize Death.

We were in Belize a few years back and had the chance to see several of these jaguars. You can look at the snout on the cat and tell what it is. I am trying to find the pictures we took of them in the caves and around Jaguar Park. Check out the web site for Jaguar Park in Belize.You will see some of their pictures of the cats and jungle. Beautiful place.

All of the black panthers are in Chicago, Detroit and Philly. They are everywhere up there.

We saw one cross the road on us one really foggy morning at 1000 yds. I just couldn't make out whether it was male or female.
