I have some relatively inexpensive 10X binos ($200 range), and a Zeiss 3-9X scope. I want to be able to see more small details on antlers/etc. Do I need a little more magnification? Do I go higher magnification on the binos or on the scope (like up to 6-18 on scope)? How high in magnification is enough / too much?

If you are going to just scan get a good pair of binos that are 10-12 power that have good class.

Walter 10x binos with good glass will get you there but most likely going to run a little more money. I bought a pair of Pentax DCF SP binos a few years back and was amazed at the difference between them and and cheaper Nikons that I had at the time.

How far away are your deer typically? I would say anywhere from 85 to 200 yards, and occasionally out to about 300. Wouldn't need anything past 300.

I'm wanting to be able to clearly see details like if any antlers are broken, bumps on the head of a button buck, etc.

check out these, they also make a 8 power that is a little less money. But good glass is going to get you what you want more than magnification will. You can have all the magnification you want but if the glass isn't good and clear it won't help much. zeiss terra ed Walter

I have 2 pair of Nikons binocs that do just fine. On my scope I make sure I have a 50mm objective for low light gathering. When it gets dark, my scope is a better judgement than my my binocs.

I run Meopta 10x42 HDs, they do that.. But I had a few weeks ago a buck at 250 yards that I couldn't quite count points on. My rifle got a Swaro HD 2.5-15 the other day. No because I need it to cleanly take a deer, but we are on a MLD3 that has strict rules including some tagged deer that would cost me 20K if I shot one..
