Try Popa Duck Lodge in St Charles. Been there the past few years and most of the guides there can call ducks in from a mile high. Dean Watson is the owner and former World Duck Calling Champion in Stuttgart. That guy is the best caller I've ever heard. Super nice too. And the food at the lodge is UN. FRIGGIN. BELIEVABLE. I second this. I had a great experience with them last year, and I'll returning for 2 days of hunting with them next week. Great lodge, guides, and food. We didn't hunt timber, but the rice field we hunted was awesome!

I would have lost my mind listening to that calling, much less for 3 days...
Last Friday, I drove about 1.5 hrs east and hunted with Cody Malone and shot our limit.
The next morning, I had a 1 hr drive west with myself and my (2) boys, we went with Jeff Elder-SilverCreek and shot a 7-man limit, so you don't have to travel far to do very well, in very different environments.
I was born and raised in South La,, spent 5 years in AR before coming to Dallas and started hunting again this year after a 20 year break. There's lots of ducks in all 3 states. :-)

Charlie Very true. I think people want to go to experience the classic Arkansas timber hunts you see in the Echo and RNT videos. Not just to shoot ducks, but to hunt them in those settings. If I go next year I may just bite the bullet and pay the $400 a gun price and hunt with Kent Cullum one day. Then spend the next couple days hunting public DIY style. Also you could probably go hunt some pretty nice timber holes in E-TX and just tell your buddies you went to Arkansas, they wouldn't know the difference.

Sorry bout the bad experience. I hunted Arkansas timber the 1st time this year. DIY style. Had an absolute great time, you can bet your last dime I'll be back next year.
In response to the east Texas timber, I was told before I went up there that Arkansas timber was just totally different than Texas. I thought. "How can it be different, timber is timber"
It's different way different.

Jeez that's retarded. Late season those mojos need to be on the very edge of the hole or even better in the back of the truck. Youd think people would catch on to that. Mallards don't like mojos, especially when they've seen em since October. And that calling is so awful, how bout some soft peckin and cluckin or a greating call? You should've asked your guide if he knew how many ducks it took to make that much racket, ducks don't quack that loud. And I agree with you that a lot of people in Arkansas are just lucky to live where they do. I'd like to see them big boys come on down here and build a club house lookin blind, blow their calls like its a competition, not wear camo or a facemask, and run 4-8 mojos all season and kill a decent amount of ducks.
Thanks for all the positive THF support. Y'all are awesome.

It's different way different. If you haven't been there, you don't get it. It IS very different. I will be spending the next 10 years trying to recreate it as well as I can somewhere in Texas. Or maybe just give up and buy a place back in AR and commit to the drive time a few times a year.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Sometimes things don't work out. Been there. I would have been an unhappy camper.

I never hear anyone complaining about the high end guides up there. Could it be you get what you pay for I agree with this. It's a fairly big group. We've had anywhere from 8-15 guys get together every year for the last 9 years. This is only the second time we've used a guide. Last time there were fewer birds (24 birds for 8 guys in 3 days) but the guides worked their butts off and were tipped extremely well. When looking at AR we could have paid anywhere from $150/day up to $400/day. We decide as a group if 1 person dropped out because of cost we would go with a cheaper option. I'm betting next time those individuals will be willing to put up a little more.
