We were thinking of feeding a little corn year round on our MLD lease and some protien in the off season. All feed suppliers around here that I have talked to say they stop selling deer corn after deer season and all they have is whole corn. Is there a difference and is it ok to feed just whole corn? Thanks in advance guys...

They eat it off the stalk so the deer wont care. The only difference is you wont be able to make it last like you can with a brodcast feeder.

That's kind of odd. I've never had any problem whatsoever finding corn all summer.

If you can get some Indian Corn the deer will eat it better and stay around more.

We buy corn year-round for livestock feed. Where are you that none of your suppliers have it?

Whole corn isn't on the cob. Its the same thing it's just not screened as well and you will have pieces of cob and stalks in it. It can stop up a feeder now and then.

cameron i can get the corn just not "deer corn" its whole corn like i guess what you would feed livestock.
salty i am talking about loose corn that would go in a feeder.
the reason i was asking this is from what i understand and it may be just a gimmik is that deer corn goes through some sort of testing process and i just wanted to make sure it was ok to feed deer whole corn and it wouldnt hurt them.

Whole corn, is loose kernels that haven't been screened for cobs etc. Where is your lease at?

I personally would feed protein in summer and now and not corn. Wastes of money and after March deer won't hit corn hard anyway

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, when I go to my local feed store, up on the board is deer corn and shelled corn. Deer corn is always higher than the shelled corn. So I buy the shelled corn. When they load it on my truck, the sack says "Deer Corn"!!! Go figure!!! I say it's all the same except the price!!!

Thats what they eat in the fields up north so it will work well. Its funny where i grew up in Michigan they say baiting/feeding is illegal yet they sell deer carrots, deer apples, and sugar beets all around the deer season. I tell you what those sugar beets are awesome, once they start chewing on them you can hear the deer a mile away.

deer corn is a marketing ploy to drive up price. It might just not be recleaned corn so it might stop up feeders with trash.

Well when the corn is harvested with a combine the kernels are removed from the cob. In the process plant debris will make its way into the bin with the corn. Most of the time the corn needs to be re-cleaned to remove the debris from the corn. And yes some of you are right the debris can cause the feeder to become clogged up. So if corn is processed one more time by a company to help with an issue, Should they be able to charge more for it?

Some "deer" corn is flavor or scented but a lot of it is just screen cleaned. Depending on supplier of whole corn, it is screened cleaned as well, granted a different screen size is used. All corn bagged no matter what it says as far as deer, whole, cracked, etc corn has passed the aflatoxin test and deemed safe. All corn that is sold from farms is tested before unloading. If it's too high it's not allowed and the farmer is stuck with it. A few years ago we dumped a few truck loads cause it tested too high. That year I bought some whole corn for the feeders and the small pieces of trash in there went thru without clogging anything up. Most years I get it straight from the combine and as long as it's set right it's as clean as bagged corn. I watch when I fill feeders and if there is any big pieces of trash I throw them out but I've never had a feeder clog up. So to sum up, unless it's scented or flavored, your paying extra for the word "deer" corn.

Alfotoxin affects a very small precentage in very high dosage of us corn crop. Its a mold.
You have to have an extremely high level for the elevator not to take it. Because they will ship it to the feedlots You can have up to 300ppb for feeder cattle
