Played a little hookey and came in late today. I work in the area of where the hunt took place so i just threw my gear in the work truck this morning and headed out at 5 to hit a public spot that has been holding alot of birds. Was a nice shoot with the usual mishaps that seem to come with every hunt I go on. Didn't bring the dog since i had to work afterwards and didn't want him to freeze to death in back of the truck. So second bird was a mallard drake that sailed about 80 90 yards in the deep water. so I took off.... shot after shot after shot!!!! I swear i shot "at" this bird 15 time with #2 and a long range patternmaster before he finally fell limp. of course the whole time hes swimming deeper and deeper. It was still a nice shoot! even though I feel like a amateur sometimes.

That's a solid hunt!

Nothing wrong with getting a strap of birds and still making the other green on the same day! Wished I lived close enough to my spots to be able to do that!

Nice hunt! Nothing harder to kill than a bird on the water! I too played a little hooky this morning and after spending 40 minutes breaking ice, we only shot two woodies. Still was a beauty morning to be hunting, albeit a tad brisk!

I've perfected the Water-Swat. You have to aim low. It still takes half a box of #4 to kill a crippled Blackjack, though. Tough little bastards.

I lost a Mottled last weekend that would not die. It swam off to the opposite shoreline after being knocked out of the air and getting shot 3 more times with #3 on the water. He just kept going. I could never find him in the grass. Didn't help that the grass was about 7ft tall and flooded...

All I could think was, "that could have been my first banded duck"! As many mottled ducks as they band, it very well could have. My next thought was, "I have to get a freakin retriever"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jeff my brother has all but given up! I dont know whats up with him? hes had some hard luck job wise and hes not making very much money. and not to mention he falls in love with a new girl every 6 months including frekin duck season??? hes been twice this year. I was able to put him on his first pintail... so that was pretty special for him.
