I bought my first retriever in March of 05. I was planning to duck hunt and run hunt tests with her. I found out that AKC will not honor her registration papers - she was registered through America's Pet Registry. This being my first dog I didn't know any of this. Now, my question is will UKC honor her papers or am I just out of luck with trying to run her in hunt tests? I know that I could have her spayed and get a limited registration with AKC but I really don't want to do that. Thanks for the help.

Well UKC MIGHT but....... the only Registry they recognize to my knowledge is AKC and the CKC. You can always run HT’s for fun but you could never title her!

Like TexasHeat said, you are SOL. If you can find the so-called "breeder" who sold you the pup, you should ask for your money back. The person is nothing better than a scam artist, imho.

Kbobbjr,

You can participate in AKC Registered events and you can title. Register your dog under the Indefinite Listing Privilege Program (ILP) AKC gave out over 2000 titles to ILP registered dogs since 2001. It's easy to get registered go to the AKC web site and print out the ILP paperwork take pictures of your dog and send in the paperwork, pictures, copy of certificate from your Vet stating that your dog has been fixed. You will get your ILP registration number and you can compete in any AKC competitions and Title. I would still look for the breeder who you got your dog from, I beleive he owes you some money back.

What was the reason the dogs could not be registered AKC?

For a dog to be AKC registered, three conditions have to exist:
1) both the sire and dam have to be AKC registered
2) the litter has to be registered with the AKC by the breeder
3) the registration papers have to be signed by the breeder and given to the new owner.

In this case, none of these 3 conditions are true.

Oh OK standard issues. I thought maybe he was speaking of some sort of birth defect or something of that nature would cause a denial of registration.

Actually - #1 was met. The problem arises because #2 wasn't met. #3 was met but the signed registration papers were not AKC papers. When I bought the puppy I didn't know that you could register a dog with any club other than AKC or UKC. I am going to have her fixed so that I can at least get a limited registration for her and still compete in hunt tests. I just wish I would have known this prior to her going into heat!!

Can you locate the breeder and have both sides sign the papers to fully register? If both parents were reg why could'nt this be done? I am sure you have but have you talked to AKC to see what options you have. Yeah not registering the litter is pretty low I reg'd this litter of 12 I have and it was 65.00

Sorry about the probs you are having, but I bet the dog will still hunt and perform for ya so not all has been lost.

I have not been able to contact the breeder as of yet. My guess is that in order to register the litter they would have had to get the sire DNA'd and they didn't want to spring for the expense (purely speculation though). I don't see any other reason not to register the litter. Unless it was an accidental litter. You are correct though, she is a great dog and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

AKC only requires DNA on the sire if he sires more than 3 litters per calendar year I believe.
