With stands being no more then 80 yards away I am considering using a rifled slug gun on the hogs instead of a .308 just for better close range knockdown performance. Anyone agree?

I would think the .308 is still going to have more knockdown at that distance.

Iv used a shot gun a good bit for pigs but its always been with buckshot within 40yrds

Stick with the 308 at that range. It's not about the size of the bullet/slug, it's all about where you put it. Besides that the 308 has more than enough knock down power and is a lot faster. Shotgunning pigs is fun but that 308 is going to be a lot more accurate and that's what matters. I shoot pigs at 75-100 yrds with a .17 HMR & 223 and they drop like they were hit with an -06. Of course, I don't take body shots either.

I know where I deer hunt it's all shotgun. Smooth bore costs about $6 per 5 shells. Sabot rifled slugs cost around $14 per 5. The difference in the two barrels is about 60-70 yards.

I hunt deer out of state with shotgun slugs. Sabot shells in a rifled barrel. They kill will out to 150 yards or so. Given the option though I would use the .308.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

I wouldn't trust a shotgun slug out past 75 yards for accuracy

I've been using a 308 with a mild handload featuring a 150 grain gameking. Shots are to the head/neck area and are from about 120 yds. and they get knocked down and hardly wiggle....much less get up.

todays rifled barrels work quite well. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot at a hog out to 100 yards. All but one I've killed with mine was DRT.

We also use 00 buck out of a full choke with a good deal of success. I have several videos of my wife shooting hogs with Buck shot.

I wouldn't do it. It may be the case that a shotgun slug has more kinetic energy than a .308 at 80 yards, but you should be able to put the .308 round within an inch of exactly where you want it to go at 80 yards... That isn't necessarily the case with the slug; particularly if you're talking about a bead sight.

The .308 is the better choice.

A good friend of mine swears by 12-gauge buckshot for pigs and he's dispatched dozens of them with a tactical pump. Says he grew up hunting them with shotguns in the LA swamps and even thought he's lived in TX for years and hunts WT and exotics with rifles, he feels comfortable using shotguns for pigs. Ive seen him put down pigs at 50-75 yards using buckshot.
