Had a great weekend at the lease with my father, sister, BIL, two nieces and some great friends. Good deer movement and my sister missed a great ten twice, but that is a different story. My kids didn't get to go, but my oldest niece grew up hunting with me and is one of the girls in my sig picture. She had always enjoyed the lease and watching the animals, but has never had a desire to shoot an animal, but loves shooting her BB gun and bow. On Friday night, my sisters family were heading up and I received a text: "Lexi asked if she could shoot a deer this weekend and tears welled up when we told her she might not get too." Lexi has never shot a gun large enough to take a deer, but has shot .22's and BB guns. Well, I decided it was time her Uncle did something about that!!! On Saturday after the hunt, we loaded her and her little sister up and headed to the pit. I started her off with an open site .22 in an AR format. She hit the can 8 out of 10 shots. Moved it farther back and she hit 9 out of 10. One more move and she hit it 6 out of 10 with open sites. We then moved on to the .22 mag. Louder but little kick and a scope. 40 yards and absolutely perfect shooting. So I loaded the single shot .243 that was given to me by a great friend on this forum. First shot, she was a little shocked but drilled the can at 50 yards. At first she was reluctant to shoot again, but a little discussion and comforting, she pulled the trigger again. Slightly right, but close. I walked her through the shot and provided words of encouragement. It was obvious she was still a little nervous about the kick. Next three shots were dead on. Her step dad got the honors of taking her out hunting, as it should be. A good cull came in, but she couldn't get a clean shot so she decided to wait for another chance on another day. I am proud of her and can't wait to be able to post her first deer. Until then, here are some of her target practice. Her little sister got in on it and shot my Ruger. Good times and a couple of great kids.

Sounds like you guys had a great weekend but now that the fire has been lit with her wanting to kill a deer it's time to get her back out there ASAP before she changes her mind.

Keep up the good work. I see you got her some pink ear muffs just like the set East uses....

Sounds like you guys had a great weekend but now that the fire has been lit with her wanting to kill a deer it's time to get her back out there ASAP before she changes her mind. She is ate up with it now. Problem is that this might be her last trip. Her Dad has her after the holidays, so we don't get her. I am going to try to get her for the extended season. Great story txshntr. You're a good Uncle. I love my nieces. I have been blessed with a great sister and we are close, so I became close to her kids. Lexi's father isn't going to win any awards for Father of the Year, but the step-father has stepped in and is a great influence. Priceless. Enjoy it they grow up fast! You know it as well as anyone Lexi is in the pic on the left side of the sig...seemed like last year. I can't wait until my two are ready. My sister just started hunting 3 years ago and that has been awesome. It is like teaching and watching a kid learn to hunt, even though she has been around it all our lives.

Awesome story! Way to take your niece under your wing and teach her! Nothing better than that!! You did great and she will treasure the memory. I can relate, my great uncle did the same for me when I was a young one. Looking forward to seeing your neice enjoy the outdoors with her family Sharing family time is the best!
