I am a total novice when it comes to modifying rifles so a bit of help is appreciated.
here is what i want to accomplish: i want a semi-auto gun that is effective in the field for squirrel, rabbit, groundhog up to 100 yds; but just as capable for training young shooters. I don't want a heavy hog of a gun to carry around in the field, especially if a 8-10 year old will be toting it on shoulder.
i would like to have the option to shoot .22 and/or .17 ammunition. i assume this is as simple as swapping the upper and barrel, while leaving trigger/lower alone.
is there a platform that would accept a .17 hmr barrel as well as a .22 without breaking the bank? does not need to be a gun that is field swapped.
i really want a volquartsen trigger assembly 1.5-3lb adjustable (if such a thing exists) as i hear they are crisp and clean.
thanks. if you have one that will fit my desires and you want to sell, pm me. thanks

Ruger 10/22 Tactical Solutions 16.5" fluted bull barrel Volq drop in trigger Hogue .920" rubber stock With a 1-4x20 scope your looking at or right over 5 lbs.
I've never seen the option of a .22 AND .17, unless your are talking about 17hm2. But what I listed above is more of a permanent rifle after you swap in the TacSol barrel on your receiver.
I bought my Ruger 10/22 from academy during one of their specials for $179. Bought a TacSol fluted and threaded barrel online ($220 ish). Then bought the stock online ($50) and put it together in my living room when the parts came in. Eventually sold it.
The second one I did the same thing and kept it.

If you want a 100 yard gun, go with a 22 mag, and swap the barrel to make it a 17HMR. A 10/22mag would be perfect, but hard to find.

Your Marlin is the gun you want for 100 yards. Get the kid a 10/22, it will be fine out to 50 yards. Actually, when you get to 100 yards, it's time for center fire, plus 22mag ammo is hard to find and harder to pay for.

Chupa looking it up now, thanks Model 455 Varmint Evolution - looks like what i am looking for (minus the semi-automatic), exept i'm not a huge fan of the stock. i wonder if it could be swapped out for something more traditional-yet still synthetic.
