I have been fortunate enough to get my grandfather's old Remington 870 Wingmaster Pump Shotgun. It has not been shot in probably in over 25 years and it has been sitting on the gun rack all that time. It has some surface rust on it but I do not think it has started to pit the metal. I would like to get it restored and pass it along to my son. Can someone recommend a gunsmith in the northeast Texas area I can reach out to and see what something like that would cost or at least tell me if it is salvageable. I sure would like to see it resorted. I bet the gun is at least over 50 years old.
If anyone has any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Have a Merry Christmas!!!

I would just wipe some RemOil on and start shooting.

I wouldn't restore it if it can be cleaned up.

It would depend on how bad it is. Got pictures?

If its surface rust you could try rubbing it down with clp and then lightly scrubbing with some 000 steel wool. I did this on several long guns i was able to save the finish on some and able to stop the damage on the others. just keep it light and wipe down with a soft cloth and re oil periodically. this is worth a try if you are considering a re blue.

My FIL's best friend had his house broken into. The bad guys got caught on the prperty before they could geet away. However, the long guns they had taken weren't found till months later. The bad guys had thrown them in the pond in front of the house when they realized the jig was up.
We used those shotguns to shoot clays and pigs with that next Christmas. They had been rubbed down and cleaned up but not "restored". Man, they were a mess, but shot fine...

Well the easy way out would be to sell it to me for $100.
I'm with the group that says clean it up and use it, but it's yours, get it redone if you want to. They are good ole guns !

I would try not to restore it with it being a classic. I have one that was made in 1957 and it looks old but it is a great gun and still shoots like it was new.

They have much better oil than rem oil for removing corrosive rust ect and not damaging the blue. There is a oil called Blue its expensive, try soaking. And coat the wood in furniture oil. After a few days you may use very mild steel wool on metal.

An 870 will never be a collector item, but like my Dads old Mod 11 Remington they have a lot of value to each of us. If you wish to have it refinished you probably can get it re blued and strip the stock and refinish for around $200
