Armyhunter, it's not really necessary to gut or "field dress" a deer on the spot. It sure makes it easier to drag, but also greatly increases the odds of having dirt, weeds, and hair on the meat. It will not affect the taste at all, for the deer to remain intact for a couple of hours. Now, I'm not saying it's OK to drive one across Texas, but waiting until you get back to camp is fine, and in most cases will be much easier and cleaner than in the field.
