cabelas

trying to do last minute research for kiddos on the archery front. i have not shot a bow in over 20 years. i had a bear compound bow in high school but never had the chance to hunt with it. kiddos want to get into it...so i guess i will have to also.

primary questions - daughter 12, boys 10

draw weight min for hunting larger game like deer...

"safe" arrow rest

accessories thought to be necessary

draw weight for practice to start? how do you measure weight?

let off min?

we live in arlington...close place to go practice?

thanks

coonsaw

they wont be hunting with it this year for sure.

This is probably the one I'd go with for kids because as they grow, you can adjust the bow and they will be able to keep it for a real long time:
http://www.huntersfriend.com/2013_Diamond_Infinite_Edge_Package/compound_bow_that_fits_everyone.htm

5-70# draw weight, 13-30" draw length and it comes with all the goodies, site, rest, quiver.

If you don't know for sure that they'll like it, you can take them to a shop and sometimes they will do classes or let you rent a recurve bow to try out. Or you can try to find a cheap recurve first to see if they'll like archery before spending the money on a compound.

as already posted, that is a good bow that can grow with them. I believe mission, fred bear etc... have similar setups as well

I have shot all those among others and listed them in order of recommendation IMO.

today's bows are more efficient than those of ears past. States like OK and MS I know still have 40lbs as min for poundage for deer hunting with a bow. 35 lbs from an efficient bow has more energy and speed than 40lb recurves and older compound bows had and the killed deer. If using lower poundage bow for game, use a good cut on contact broad head and keep the range short.

I shot a mission menace when I was younger. great bow and good for a growing youth. I started only pulling back 30 pounds and quickly increased strength to 45 pounds. I took my first deer pulling back 45 pounds and it was a 35 yard shot. Using muzzy MX3 I got a complete pass through and she ran 20 yards. I would recommend that bow to any youth. The mission craze is there latest bow out and would be a great choice. As Ted Nugent says its not all about shooting the most poundage but a correct shot placement.

An "archer" tries to see how far away he can get from his target and still connect. A "BOWHUNTER" tries to see how CLOSE he can get to his.

There are lots of great bows listed above.

Nobody has mentioned the Hoyt yet. They offer a couple of exciting youth bows: Ruckus and the Ignite. Both are highly adjustable, and really well made.

When shopping, my daughter (10) chose a Ruckus over all the others she shot (pretty much everything on the list above) The fit and finish are top notch, and it is pretty darn easy to tune.

Mrs shoots a Diamond Razor Edge (predecessor to the Infinite Edge) That is probably my #2 choice for a highly adjustable bow. Diamond makes a fantastic product for growing kids.

You may find bows at a big box store, but nobody has more kids bows (or adult bows for that matter) than Cinnamon Creek Ranch.

As an added bonus, CCR has a kids league on Monday nights. There is usually a good turnout, the shooting is top notch, there are people there to help coach the kids along, and it becomes a social event for them as well. It is a great experience. I live in Arlington too, and we make the trip pretty much every Monday night.

I have a youth bow for sale peep

Diamond Infinite Edge is hard to beat. My dad didn't let me hunt with my bow till I was at 40lb, and I think that's a good poundage.
