How many of you folks are hunting or have hunted coyotes with a shotgun? I'm interested in doing this and have been trying to pattern my Beretta A300 to see what kind of choke/shell combo would work best. I've heard that a turkey choke works well with smaller loads (BB, T, etc) and that mod/full chokes work well #4 buckshot and 00 buckshot. What are you guys using and having success with?

Thanks for any input. Have a good one!

I use the dead coyote choke and dead coyote T shot out of a beretta 391. It is a very deadly combination and I have rolled a few animals out past 60 yrds. However it's pretty expensive to shoot. Whenever I run out I will be switching to the new Hornady Coyote load. It basically the exact same thing as the Heavi Shot, but it's only 14.00 a box vs 40.00. I picked a box up last week and it patterns very close to the same with the dead coyote choke.

I use a Carlsons Dead Coyote choke in one of my 870's, an Indian Creek Black Diamond strike in another 870 and a Briley Ported extended turkey choke in a Browning BPS. All throw great patterns with their respective loads. But you won't know what your shotgun likes until you start experimenting with load/choke combo's on the patterning board. Sorry, that's the way it works.

What? One is Tungsten "T" shot and the other is Nickel Plated lead "BB's" in a flight control wad. The flight control wad tends to not like constrictions much tighter than an Improved Cylinder and tends to work best in a cylinder bore.

If you don't have access to a specialized choke, or don't wish to buy one (I didn't), you can get the Federal buckshot with flitecontrol wad.

Hornady also makes a similar load, and I think they have it in #4 buck which is really popular for coyotes....but....I took my shotgun out and patterned both the federal 00 and the hornady 00, both 3 inch, with the special wad from both companies, and the Federal by far, and I mean by like 200% out patterned the Hornady (I really like loading Hornady bullets, I wanted this shotshell to work better).

These work better in cylinder/improved cylinder chokes, and I patterned mine with the IC, in a stock Remington 11-87 with a 26" barrel. I got 40 yard patterns with 00 that had more than 50% of the pellets inside of what I'd say is a 10 to 12" circle. Hornady's loads were more in the 20" diameter with way more fliers....the Hornady performed similar to the normal remington 3" 00 buckshot...I didn't see enough improvement to have me buying any more of their varmint loads for 12ga.

My no means was my testing scientific in nature, just a 20 minute test to decide which load I'd take to the field....it was so one sided that I didn't need to burn any more ammo.

Here are the Federal loads I used:

I tried their suggestion and used a IC even tried a steel shot with horrible results. They group well with the DC choke, but not nearly as good as the Heavi shot. The only reason I'm contemplating using Hornady is due to price. However sometimes it's worth a little more money to know the animal is going down if it comes within 70yrds.

So yes to answer your ? Response. The Hornady shoots better out of a DC choke better than the others I tried!

And I kill the majority of my coyotes at little more than at the end of my shotguns muzzle.

I'm not doubting you on the issue of your choke constriction. One of my 870's has a DC choke and I shoot lead 4BK out of and it throws an excellent pattern with it, but typically that tight of constriction would "doughnut" buckshot. My surprise was in that you said Tungsten "T" shot and nickel plated lead "BB's" were similar.
