I am have a Remington 700 .308 win with a nikon monarch scope. I just got the gun, I am looking to find out what the most friendly ammo is for the rifle to dial in the scope to make sure it is good. Any opinion would be appreciated!

Hunting ammo or target practice ammo?

Federal makes both pretty well.

Target ammo:

178 A-max atop 43.0 to 45.0 gr of Hodgdon Varget. It kills and it does pretty well in the wind. I've shot it to 1100 yards.

After that the 175 Sierra Match King, same powder charge. It is also loaded in Federal Gold Metal Match.

Inside 400 yards I did well with a 165 Sierra Game King spire point boat tail. I've still got one I recovered from a buck that weighed 145 gr and was 3/4" in diameter, after passing through him.

If you are going to check your rifle try a box of 175 gr Sierra in federal match ammo. But usually new factory rifles one would first break in the bbl.

Hornady A-max for both. I use them in 22-250, 243, and 260. I used to use them in 308. Every rifle I've put them in has run like a champ.

Other than that, spire point for hunting or target, Match King for target or hunting. That will be debated that a Match King isn't good for hunting, but it does work.

"Break-in" I don't subscribe to, clean it, foul it, shoot the dickens out of it.

Unless you reload, Federal Gold Medal Match. Never found a .308 that would not shoot well with it.

Just sight it in with the same ammo you target shoot or hunt with.

Uprisings started or quelled, tornadoes rerouted, elections rigged.

Federal 165 gr Sierra Game Kings are the best in my opinion, and shoot identical in my Savage to 168 Match Kings...

If you are shooting reloads, then Federal produces some of the best factory loads around. They have a test video on U-Tube of 4 of their loads and its effect on blocks of ballistic gel and same with a large cow femur in the gel. I believe they used Trophy Bonded, Sircorro, Sierra Game King, and Barnes TTSX. All the videos I've watched Barnes is the only one that penetrated the block, bone and all
My 3 308's all shoot 150 TTSX, 165 Game King, 175 SMK under a MOA.
Usually with factory made hunting I do the 100 Break In per Shilens Bbl Co.
Good luck

I just got a new remmy in 308 and bought 2 boxes of superformance. Loaded with 155 sst's. Just to break in barrel and they shoot a ragged hole at 100. Not sure I have any reason to reload for this one LOL

You stole my load!! 44.5- 45.0 grains = 0.3" out of my SPS AAC!!

Using Berger Classic Hunter I'm getting 0.5".
