We used to shoot the old original WW 140gr Silver Tips in .270 with outstanding results
Back in the day. I was sorry to see that factory load go away... Well I was able to purchase 1000 original Winchester 140gr silver tip bullets a while back and I'm in the process of trying to reload something close to the factory specs Winchester used to have back then.
Does anybody here have any idea what kind of numbers those loads had back then??? I'm thinking they were in the 2900fps+ range and using a tad slower burning powder but I can't find any data on those old rounds! I know I will have to experiment some but I was hoping to narrow it down from the start.

I would try Win 760 powder Win cases and Win LR primers, start with the books lowest recommended charge and work up. This should get you there. I load 140 Hdy BT SP over 51 grs of 760 in my pre-64 with excellent results.

Thanks
Doc

I just pulled out my 2010 Winchester catalog and didn't see any 140 Silver Tips but they show the 130 at 3060fps at the muzzle.

He isn't talking about the ballistic silvertips, but the old "silvertips" they don't make anymore. Its a soft point bullet with a big silver tip.

Thanks Doc... that does sound like a good place to start. I will put some research into the win powder I didn't consider the 760 "hope I can find some to work with" . I do have plenty of win brass on hand. I have a load that I've used with H4350 I'm gonna give that a go also.

And yes JCB, these bullets are considerably different than the silver tips that are going to be listed in the newer catalogs so they won't be shown. These bullets date back "I think" into the 1950's and carried on till the 80's. I don't think they will get near the velocity of the new offerings.

Thanks for the input guys...

The White Box 257Rbt's 100 gr'ers I used up until they were Disc'd were NOT Plus P's, but my 1979 USRAC Fwt shot them into teeny tiny little bitty holes a handful at a time....and would NOT shoot anything else I ever found the same way.....and put lots of meat on the table for 10 years or better.

I know exactly which ones yall are talking about because I use to shoot them in a 30-06. They are still shown in the 2010 catalog under the Super X line. The Ballistic Silver Tip is under the Supreme line up.

Thanks JCB!... I didn't know that they were listed still. I will give them a look. I'd like to get my hands on some factory loads and see just where they fall on a chronograph that would sure help on cooking up a reload.

First deer I ever killed was with Winchester Silver tis in 30-30. Hopefully someone will have some and can check the velocity for you or find some older Winchester data with them listed.

I love the old Silvertips - one of the original attempts at a controlled expansion bullet. Winchester made a 130 gr flat base version for the .270 from probably the 40s until the last few years when the discontinued them. In the 90s, Winchester loaded a 140 Silvertip boattail in their original "Supreme" line that they eventually replaced with Nosler / Combined Technology bullets. The factory specs were 2960 fps out of a 24" barrel for the 140 version. If you are loading the 140 gr bullets, I would reference Hornady 140 gr data to get you on the right track. I have some 140s STBTs I purchased a while back, but have not loaded them yet in the 270 Win.

If you need a few vintage 130 grain factory rounds to run thru your chrono shoot me a PM with your address.

Kentucky: very generous offer, but he has 140gr STBTs. Your box is 130 gr flat bases.

Lou270,
Thanks for the input and info. That helps me quite a bit! I didn't realize they were listed as quite that fast. And as you mentioned, I will start off with the hornady 140 recipe and work from there.
