Went hunting at Oscar's place outside Taylor last week. The dogs did pretty well, despite being rammy from not hunting for the better part of a year.

Here's GWP Otto pointing a couple of birds about 15 yards off, Elhew's Mark Messier (Moose) on a sloppy (for him) point with Cliff waiting for me to get done with the camera, and me with the day's bounty and a very tired dog.

I don't think that the number of birds shot at Oscar's place is any indication of a comeback.

Great pictures either way.

Yep- All released birds, but some were pretty spooky from previous hunts. Maybe the ones that got away will breed but I kinda doubt it.

Does anyone know what the survival rate is for released birds? I never have any luck....they disappear in days to weeks.

I've kept them in a Johnny house for years. Many of them did not return and went feral. Conditions are perfect over there. The results were mixed. We did see two different clutches come into our subdivision form the feral quail, but that's two clutches in 20 years.

We were able to get some dog word from the feral birds.

Thanks for the response. I am in Brown County, north of Brownwood. We are seeing very few wild quail in my area. I'm building a Johnny house, it is getting more complicated all the time: hogs; coons; foxes; bob cats.... But I am going to do it, I am 70 and trying to get a few coveys established just to run the puppy. She is hot blooded and needs to hunt. Wish they were wild ones, but there not.....

I went again with a friend and his son-in law. This was the son-in-law's first hunt with pointing dogs. He shot well, and enjoyed his outing.

Here's Otto the wirehair pointing another bird.

Always approach the pointing dog with the muzzle in the air.

Thanks, Bill. Good point. I'll make sure to remind him before our next hunt.
