Hello all, I was just curious as to how many of you all are using AR's to deer hunt with. A friend of mine just bought a DPMS AR in .308 last week to use for deer/hog hunting this season, so I was wondering as to how many of you us AR's to hunt deer, or hogs and what calibers are you using. I would like to get me an AR also to use for deer hunting but it probably won't be till next season. I am considering getting an AR in either of these choices.... .308, 6.8spc, or the 300 blackout. I would also like to get on in the 5.56 as well to. Thanks for reading and I appreciate any and all feedback you all share.

I would go .308. Best availability of ammo and the most powerful of the three you listed

I get real trigger happy when I got my AR in my hands so I just use it on hogs, cause there would be more then one hole in a deer if I used it..I let the hogs have it when im using it. Lots of people do I would stick with the .308 for a good all around caliber.

I love my 6.8 and pretty much use it for everything from deer and pig to coyotes.

Friend of mine is loading 62 grain Barnes TTSXs in 5.56 for his boy in his AR. He said every pig and deer he has shot with it made a pass through and the animal didn't go far if any at all. If I was gonna get one exclusively for deer hunting I'd find a Remington R25 in .243.

I will be carrying an 308 AR or a much older gun for the remainder of the season. Never shot a deer with the AR, but this year is the time to break that streak. My only concern right now is kicking brass out and cracking one of my windows!

I run a Wilson Combat 6.8 often.
Great for our stalk hunting and I feel confident past 300 with it.

used SCAR .308 for first time this year to deer hunt. My son made a shot on deer at 120-145 yds. Deer went about 50 yds before dropping. So, we were happy with that result. Have used a 30-06 in past.

My son and i have gone hog hunting couple of times this year with me using 223 and him the 308. I will take the 308 every time. Consistently drops the pigs. Hold up a 308 rd vs 223 and you will see what why.

I use my remington .308 AR for deer and hogs, great shooting and have never had either run more than a few yards. 20 round mag is great for hogs!

I have both a 6.8 and a .308 AR that I'll carry when the mood strikes. I love that .308 AR-10. The only drawback is that is a bit heavy. I'll grab the 6.8 if I'm going to do a lot of walking. Here is a pic of the AR-10 from last weekend.

great looking turkey. I have seen some when i have my 308 with me but was afraid of what would happen to the meat if i put a 308 round thru the bird. where did you aim? Looks like head is still attached. neck shot?

Aim far back. If you can hit them in the back behind the breast you won't loose much meat, maybe the legs. There is some risk shooting them with a rifle. I hit this one a little father forward and lower then I would have liked and had to trim some the breast meat. Head shots will work too if you can make the shot.

I have never used my R-25 .308 for deer but have definitely thought about taking it. It will definitely do the trick and it is accurate as hell!

168 grain Barnes TSX, it's a 308.

I used a 5.56 AR on 2 deer this year. One doe, one spike. The rounds were factory ammo, Hornady 55g SP and Barnes 55g TSX. Both were lung shots. The TSX had complete pass through while the Hornady SP was lodged against the skin on the otherside.

Would I do it again with a .223? Probably not unless I had to. If I did I would only go for head shots and keep the range inside 75yrds. There was absolutely no blood trail to follow on either deer.

I use my AR10 in 260 Remington/suppressed or a 223 suppressed with heavy hand loads. When my 338 suppressor gets here I will have a third option, my AR10 in 338 Federal. They're big, ugly, and tough so I'm not afraid to take them afield.
