Skinned 3 pigs last night. Used a good 3 blade Browning knife that I've had for years. Holds a good edge, but was only good for two pigs. Maybe we should measure knife edges by how many pigs it'll let us clean.

A 2 Pig knife is the best I've got. What about you guys?

Check out Havalon Knives. A little pricey but they are great for fish or game. Surgical blades, very sharp.

Use these for opening up the critters

Then buck knife to complete
usually a few quick strokes on the diamond between critters
keeps blade very sharp and very little pressure needed to cut

got some havalons have not got any critters to try them on frown

I've got some. Nice and sharp like a razor blade, but they don't last long on a hog.

I have a custom made D2 that gets through three pretty good. Will do a couple more with effort, but it is PIA to sharpen.

I only use high carbon steel knives for skinning - not stainless.
I have a Smiths double sided sharpener to do touch ups with.
I cant find my best Skinner, but its an Old Timer Sharp Finger and the last 1/4" of the tip has been broke off. I ground it down like a butter knife and sharpened it around the radius.
Don't look at it too long...... its so sharp it will cut your vision.

That's why I just field dress 'em, cut off their heads then burn off the hair and smoke 'em whole.

i bought a cheap-o serrated knife from tom thumb couple of years ago. it has the micro-serrations. have gutted, skinned, and hacked up 30+ piggies with it and it is still going. only used it the first time because i forgot to bring my good one. have not used good one since.

Havalon blades are good for about one hog but that's ok they are $0.50 so after I clean a hog I replace the blade and am ready for the next.

I bought a custom blade off of a fellow THFer, S.Potts. Very hard steel. Very hard to sharpen. Skins a couple before needing touched up. I use a Cutco serrated blade for cutting the hide around the legs and cutting off the leg joints. I use a meat blade folder for piecing out. The utility knife blades work well for the skin cuts. I have one of the Gerber gut hooks that utilizes the utility knife blades. It was worth the investment.

If you can, wash them piggies down good. That will help.

this will save your blade... the hair is what dulls them more than anything so opening them up with the carpet blade will help a lot. and yes wash them off also

If it dulls after 2 you need a better steel blade

Try Knives Of Alaska Magnum Hunter

Have a steel handy to straighten edge
Wipe blade often to remove stuck on fat and protein
Sometimes blade is not dull it's just loaded and covered up sharp cutting surface

Browning is not known to use high quality steel in their knives

THIS and a Havalon is what I'm using now days.
I can't imagine anything working better than this hook blade to unzip um with!

Actually you hoist them up on the game hoist and wash them down using your gator's custom built water system. Not hard to do if you are prepared.

Two is probably about the limit for my knives, but I keep a steel handy and hit it between each hog to keep it sharp!

I just put an edge on them. I have two of the Brownings. I had given one to my Dad, but when he passed away I got it back so it could keep hunting. It's pretty quick to get them screaming sharp when I use those diamond stones. Medium, then Very Fine, then a leather strop with jeweler rouge. Very quick process, since the diamond stones remove steel so quickly.

Browning makes good knives?

EDIT: I used something very similar to the havalons above when I worked in a lab and had to dissect a bunch of pigs (not feral pigs). The surgical steel is very sharp, but dulls quickly. And I'd want some Kelly clamps to replace the blades. . not something you should do with bare hands.

I watched a butcher skin and dress out a pig on the ground. He used a butcher knife and a steel to keep it sharp. He made it seem real easy. Didn't take any time. I have tried the same thing with out the same results.

I just ordered a Havalon. Heard good things about them, so I'm hoping it turns out to be a good product.

Chris42, i don't know if Browning even makes or has knives made anymore. These folders date from the 80's. They've been great knives, holding a good edge. And I'll need them again, having shot 3 more pigs this evening.
