I think scoring is a regional thing too. I know dozens of people in CO and KS that have probably never scored a deer. Measure width of the rack and weight of the deer, thats it.

now what would seem more interesting if your neighbor called to tell you he saw: A "heavy 8" or a "heavy 180" 8" (assuming you don't think the neighbor is full of it)stir

i like knowing score and age for all the reasons mentioned but one of shockeys shows was on the other day and he was hunting caribou in alaska with a native guide, as he was narrating the hunt they were passing HUGE bulls, the guide kept telling him to wait because there are bigger ones. they finally glassed a small group and the guide picked one out for him, didnt look anywhere near as big as the ones passed earlier but shockey took his word for it and took the bull down. turns out the guide was looking for the biggest bodied bull he could find, he wasnt even looking at antlers, and the last one fit the bill.

Well, back in primitive times, a 180 would have been described as "the biggest buck you ever saw", "you ain't gonna believe this ****", "I swear I ain't lyin'", "heavier than an elk and wider than a longhorn steer", and a bunch of other cool descriptive sayings.

And then all our imaginations would go into overdrive. It really was fun. smile

I have only scored one of my deer and that was once I was on here. My main reason was to get a good frame of reference for all the score talk on here. That buck was simply huge to me. It scored 143 before deductions and 138 with deductions. Which brings up another question. Do most the scores on here include deductions? I would bet they don't.

No. I am like you. 140 is huge for my deer. There are some bigger, but if you take a 140" deer, you have done something.

Many on here talk about a 140 like it's a cull. I really don't know what to make of it. Some well managed places, some penned-deer shooting, and some out and out exaggeration I think.

I mostly don't care about scoring unless it is a true monster or trophy-worthy.

Good reason to score them, so you can see if you've done something by hitting the 140 mark. grin

Don't do that... I'm cleaning the garage out today. If he helps, the neighbors will pick it off and run it back to the garage.

On avg I bet that's not the case on being bigger. A select few perhaps, but that's only bc I've let those get older than I should have from being focused on trying to kill 1 ancient buck.

Could always hunt out around Woden, then we'd be hunting some of the same deer.

Yep. I just don't think what I call the "Crockett herd" is quite as big on average as the "deep east TX" herd. But we all know a bruiser can come from either area.

I could be full of dukey.

I've known of a lot of big deer over the years that have come from over that way. A lot of outside genetics got poured into those pines.
