just watched about an hours worth of broadhead tests. looks like the deepest penetrating mechanical is the grim reaper. the second is the rocket sidewinder.
the Rage, meatseeker, toxic, nap, all were poor penetrators but left impressive entrance holes.
not surprisingly, the fixed blade broadheads performed the best

was it the original reaper or 2" model?
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

I hunt on an archery only lease and 6 out of 7 use Grim Reaper heads. You just have to decide do you want penetration or a huge hole. I shoot the 1 3/8 heads at hogs and 2 inch at deer. The 2 inch heads are not always reuseable after a kill but that is the price you pay for such a massive hole.

My favorite mech. was the 90gr Slammer head by Rocket. They have long quit making those heads but they were truely awesome. On the grim reapers I here mixed reports. Some love them others hate them. I guess that's one reason we have so many choices.

100 grain Montec G5s with my Barnett Quad 400 crossbow. Shot four does and each time the bolt went completely through. Plus, Montec sells matching unsharpened broadheads for practice so you don'ttear up the target so bad.

I used Rage for years. I loved the massive holes but hated the lack of penetration. I switched over to the G5 Montecs. I love them however I hate the lack of blood trails at times.
I did buy a pack of the 2" GR Whitetail Specials. I am chomping at the bit to sink one in a WT. In fact, Im gonna nock one up this afternoon and see if I can shoot one.
I have read everywhere the the original reapers at the best penetrating mechanical BH on the market.
My dad swears by the sidewinders. You couldnt pay him to shoot something else.

I say get the best of both worlds. Why should a hunter have to choose between huge holes or a pass through? WHY NOT HAVE BOTH?! I use Silver Flame XXL on 90% percent of my North American hunts. It is a 2 inch diameter fixed blade that flies like a dart, leaves huge holes on both sides, and a great blood trail. I have one of them that has been shot through 13 animals. (smallest animal was an 80 lb hog) Just re-sharpen and away you go. They cost more to buy. When you think about the fact that I have shot 13 animals with one head, I think I have saved money in the long run.

Rage all the way. As far as penetration goes I had a pass through with a Rage 3 blade on a doe two weeks ago. Now with the 2 blades I've never gotten a pass through but with the blood trails I've gotten with them I'm not sweating it.

I have only killed one animal with my bow but it was a doe with a Rage titanium 2 blade. I had a pass through and the broadhead stuck a couple of inches Into the ground.
Shooting 68 lbs, 30" DL, 405 total grains at approx 310fps.

not surprisingly, the fixed blade broadheads performed the best Real world I've someone put an ulmer edge, and pass through a mulie deer at 105 yards, and I put a "Solid broadhead" through both shoulder blades of a doe at 40. There are mechincals that will out penetrate fixed... its all about cutting surface and cutting width. Less width more pentratration.

I used the Grim Reaper Whitetail Specials this wknd. I shot a bobcat. DRT. I also shot a spike. DRT.
Craziest thing though. On the spike, he was slightly quartering away and I mean slightly. I hit him just above the middle of his body about 5" behind his shoulder. Smashed both lungs.
I am shooting from a 30' elevated treestand down to where he stood at 17 yds.
My arrow entered his side and hit his spine. Which means that my arrow deflected and traveled up upon entering the animal. The blades were big enough to devestate both lungs.
My BH was stuck in his spine.
hey, Im not complaining other than the fact that there is a tremendous amount of blood under my feeder.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

I had used Rage 2 Blades for years with great success but only had complete pass thru shots on about 70% of shots. Last year I started out using the Rage Chisel Tip and they performed great but I only shot 2 deer with them. They were both complete pass thru shots.
Then....I wanted to try the Grim Reapers so I went with the 1 3/8" Razor tips and I'll never use anything but them. I've had complete pass thru shots on every animal I've put the pin on (5 whitetail, 7 pigs). Their motto of Watch 'Em Drop is very accurate. Ketchup bottle blood trails and the longest recovery has been 65-75 yards.

Ulmer Edge is probably going to be the deepest penetrating mechanical. 1 1/2" cutting diameter helps there.
I want to try the Grim Reaper WT specials next year. Not that there is anything wrong with the Ulmer Edge, I just like tinkering. 2" diameter is appealing and I feel like I can blow them trough anything short of a big pig with 76lbs of energy.

I wish everyone would shoot all these other broad heads listed on this thread. The Reapers are getting expensive. I remember getting them before they were mass marketed for $14.95 for a 3 pack. Now they are charging what everyone else is. $40 for 3 broad heads is crazy. I was hoping since Gander stopped carrying them that they might get cheaper but, that's not the case. Sad deal.

Allstar archery still has the reaper hog heads $20 for a 3 pack. They work just fine.
