I killed a one and a half year old spike this afternoon and I will sleep good tonight. Did that yesterday morning!....Nice cow horned spike with one beam sporting a 1" kicker.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Never gave a care about score, I guess that's a bug that never bit me. Just getting out, sitting in a stand, or up in a tree, or stalking the woods is the good part. Stew, sausages, roast, and steaks for a couple of months is the payoff.

I agree sneaky, but its also almost a phase some hunters go through, a transition if you will. We go from killing any thing with horns, to being more selective, to score, to back to just being off the damn concrete and in the woods. I know guys that have killed hundreds of deer but in the last 10 years they haven't killed a deer yet hunt every chance they get. Their reasons are their own, I don't question them or ask what they are holding out for, because I've learned they aren't hunting for a deer, they are just hunting

only ever shot one buck and I have never measured it. Don't really care what it scores but I am kinda curious what it would.

I must have skipped over the disappointment stage. Not once have I ever regretted killing a deer. Ditto It could happen to me, it just hasn't yet. Now that I have my own place to manage, I've instantly become more particular about the age of bucks being shot. I'm with you on the age part. I've passed several young but very nice deer this year. I am afraid that my wife's uncle will be taking one of them tomorrow, since he has requested to be able to hunt at the farm. If he does, I'll congratulate him and be happy for him, because he isn't a hunter and is wanting to get out there with his son and hunt. That is more important to me than the age of the deer he's liable to shoot...I kind of hope a bruiser steps out for them, even though it will mean I can't get him. But I would rather that happen than for him to shoot a young buck that has potential P.S. Score is irrelevant to me...I've never scored one yet, not saying I'm not curious...but the look of the deer is what gets my blood pumping heck, I still get a rush squeezing the trigger on a doe it means fresh vittles
I will get off in a little bit You shouldnt have said that

I don't worry about scoring either, but unlike some I absolutely treasure the horns. From shoulder mounts to just taking a bow saw and cutting the skull cap off, I have saved every buck's antlers from the last 25 years of hunting whitetails. Meat comes and goes, but antlers help me remember the experience. Most state on this thread and I agree 100%, if you are thrilled with the buck, then don't worry about the score (within reason...age, AR, etc.)
i was blessed two weeks ago to get a drop tine 10 point. Not the biggest scoring buck of my life, but was the first drop tine I had ever seen in my life! I do not care what it scores!

I don't score any of my deer unless I need it for management purposes.
I couldn't care less what my bucks score.
I do age each one though
IMO way too much emphasis is placed on scores.
That's apparent because prolly 90% of the scores posted on here are fudged by a heavy margin oh sure you're one of those that always second guesses someone's score they post up!!! I was lucky enough to kill a net book deer when I was 11. I've killed some bigger ones since then, but there's just something about your first 170" that is special.

I put a tape to my best bow buck and it broke my heart. I've shot a couple of decent ones since but I haven't put a tape to them. I've got a spot reserved for the right buck on the wall but the other two I have mounted aren't there because of the antler measurements. One my son killed at 12 years old in Missouri on his first/only out of state hunt on a youth weekend and the other I killed on my sons first hunt when he was 7. The next year he started killing his own. I want to kill a really nice buck but the hunting is about more than that.

I remember a time when you killed a deer and the #1 question asked was, "what did he weigh?", not "What did he score?".
It wasn't all that long ago either.
I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.

If the tape had the potential to break your heart I would have left it in the drawer...

I've never shot a deer worth scoring ... The only one was a deer my dad injured and I found him and dispatched him , he's on my dads wall. Still waiting on mine

Still waiting on mine I've only shot one buck that wasn't a spike - an 6.5 year old 8-point cull the ranch owner asked me to take out. The ranch scored it at 102 for their records. I'd be interested in the score of anything I did get, but as I am clueless to scoring, it's more for my own education than anything else. I really have no interest in putting one on the wall, although the wife really wants one.
Deer quality is not measured by antler size

I score most of mine just bc I'm curious and want to keep a running average for the property. If you don't want your deer scored though, don't show it to me, I will tell you what it scored to the nearest 1/8"ish and even age it to the nearest .5ish.

Score is a good way to give a quick perspective on the deer's size I must concede.
It has gotten blown way out of proportion for too many purposes though.
I miss the days of describing deer as the "heavy 8", "narrow 11", etc..... I'm just old I know.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Scoring a deer is for the judgment of others. If I shoot him I am a proud hunter!
