I never have liked hunting really windy cold days, but that's more for me than the deer. I hunt big CRP flats and the deer get a little timid in the open with high wind. I've had better luck hunting edge rows and thickets in the wind. Better wind break for me and apparently deer too.

Wind plays around too much with the deers hearing and smelling senses....makes them uncomfortable and very wary.

I hate hunting in strong winds... But I would rather be hunting more than working any day!!!

So luck at the bright side…. You got there ahead of the winter storm so when the wind lays down your hunting can heat up really quick. And when the rain/sleet/snow slow down or stop be sure and get into your stand ASAP.

Good luck to you and keep us updated.

Find a bowl or valley that has the north wind blocked and a food source and you will find a concentrated gathering of deer.

Ditto to what Pitchfork said and glass, glass, glass. I love this weather for glassing the big ones and then still hunting them. With the wind it seems to help my stealth considerably, just go slow and glass low and high every step or two.

Best buck I saw this year wind was blowing steady at 30mph. Of course he was locked down on a doe.

I like stalking when it's real windy. Most of the deer will bed down in the thick stuff and that's where I'll go looking for them slow and easy.

I agree with billybob- nothing is etched in stone, there is always the exception- but generally it seems to me that a buck doesn't like moving around in strong wind. The day may be better spent doing more scouting, etc.
Exceptions- The Rut, Feeders, etc.
I think a light, misty rain- can be very good.

My grandpa always says that you can't kill the big one if you don't go!

I don't care for hunting windy days, but I'll go hoping the wind lays near sundown which is uaually the case and the deer tend to move when it does, after laying up most of the day.
I've stalked deer that I spotted grazing several hundred yards away and worked my way into bow range (25 yards) for a successful stalk and kill. That was a perfect hunt, and somthing I have yet to duplicate.
Wind tends to swirl when it hits tree lines or hills, so I've had little success hunting down in canyons, but hunting the rim usually works pretty well.
The deer will always be jittery and wary because of those swirling winds and currents so they mostly lay low until it calms down.
You have to remember that strong winds take away the deers most dependent senses, and that is sight, with everything moving, also their sense of smell, because of swirling winds, and their sense of hearing, because of the rustling leaves and branches, and of course the wind itself. They will still move looking for a comfortable place to bed down if they can find it.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I have good luck hunting in the pine thickets on windy days. The deer are very spooky though and on the move

My experience is wind causes big deer to lay up. With that said there is always exceptions to the norm. This year I shot a nice buck on a hot windy day in November. Moral of the story...you ain't getting nothing setting in your den and Rut trumps wind.

I went out this morning. It was cold and the wind was really howling. I did see one small buck at about 300 yards off, and he was really hoofing it from one wooded area to another wooded area. That gave me the idea to hunt this afternoon at a blind back in the thick tangle. Wind was rather calm in there, and I had deer all around me from 4:45 to 5:30. The last deer was a really hungry 8 point, and he ate every kernel of corn that the feeder had thrown. He was real hungry, but he did look fat and healthy. I kept waiting for the hogs, but none showed. Thank goodness for my little Coleman catalytic heater.

They have to eat sometime and with cold temps a several days of strong wind strung together, they're going to get up and move. I shot an old buck a while back one morning w/ 30-40mph winds and mid-teen temps. 6th buck I saw that morning in 30 minutes.
