Well the story starts on Saturday evening when I shot the biggest deer of my life. I shot this deer with my 25-06 right in the shoulder and he dropped. So I drove down to him and he gets up and starts walking straight away and stands at the fence about to jump. So I shoot him from the rear and he drops in his tracks. I drive over to him and pick up his head and I was in amazement and I went to pieces. I walk over to my truck lay my head on the hood and finally compose myself. So I fill out my log and tag and begin to cut out the date when all of the sudden he jumps up and runs down the fence hitting it numerous times with his front end on the ground. He comes back out in the field and falls over. In a panic I run toward him to cut his throat and he jumps up again hitting the fence and lands on all 4 feet and then walks back to the fence and jumps it and walks away. I wait till midnight get permission from landowners and go look for him but can't find him only a few specs of blood. I look the next day and every day since but can't find him and I am sick. I call the game warden to ask for his help getting on a landowner I couldn't get permission from and he agrees to help. So this morning he goes and looks and he finds him in that landowners creek. I meet him and he gives me my deer!!! I would like to say a big thank you to mr. Dowdy from wise county. I couldn't have found him without this very kind man.

Oh the deer scored 154 on the money.

Loosing the biggest deer of your life and recovering the rack is the best season of your life? Something screwed up with that.

Nice buck dude ! A guy on our lease also shoots a 25-06. He also lost a big deer this year that suddenly came back to life. Funny cause he did just like you, walked to his truck got a tag was filling it out, and suddenly come back and the buck was gone. He never found his though.
I'm just saying.
People talk smack about shooting whitetail with a 7mag but it sure kills em dead

Glad you found your buck, congrats. I hope that you take something away from the experience. I'll say the obvious, why didn't you make sure the thing was dead while you had the chance to end it for good, live and learn.

Congrats on your outstanding buck. Great work by the GW lending you a helping hand. Don't let what happened bother you because of some of these comments. If you hunt long enough, situations like this happen to many hunters when they assume the shot did the job especially when it appears to.

Kudos to you for being persistant and contacting the GW for help. That's honoring the buck to stay committed to finding him. He's a great looking buck.

I will say that I think a 25.06 is a little light for my comfort level for big bucks. I know there are plenty of hunters that have had great success with that load on white tails.

Very glad you found him. An excellent deer no doubt.

But I can understand some of the comments that have been shared. Perhaps a better title might be "What could have been my worst season ever", had you lost both the meat and the rack.

yeah... I'm sure none of us feel any worse about you not getting a freezer fill of meat to go with that rack, than you do.

Congrats on the buck. Despite your mistakes, it sounds like you did everything in your power to find him. I don't know a single hunter that is perfect that has hunted very many years and remained that way.
