Anyone have any place to go shoot some WILD bird in the panhandle? We just returned from Paxton, NE from a 5 day bird hunt with few roosters. Never had such a bad year hunting their. Assuming the drought and especially the hail took a toll on the birds.

I had looked at going this year, but after reports decided it wasn't worth the trip.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

I am going on the weekend of the 14th (our 30th Annual Hunt) but the advance report went something like this....Well, lets see, I saw one rooster out behind the bunkhouse sitting on the combine the other day, and then I saw one a couple of months ago flying across the road with some hens, but that is about it...bring some coyote medicine when you come...

Northern Panhandle bird report. Father has seen more birds on the county roads and at the farm than he remembers for the past three years. I even saw some on a trip back in September. Hunting has been miserable since the droughts/fires in 2010 plus the resurgence of the coyote population. We're anticipating this year to be better though based on timing of moisture and birds seen so far. All I'm hoping for is the chance to fire a shot or two.

You may still be able to get a spot on the Olton Chamber of Commerce hunt the first weekend of December. They are located just west of Plainview and I have always been satisfied with their hunts even during these recent lean years.
Go to Olton Chamber Of Commerce on the web and pull up their annual pheasant hunt. Their hunt will run $350.00 per person for two day and included breakfast and lunch both days.
Good luck, Bob

We will be in Hart for the Lions Club hunt on the second weekend, its $150 if you hunt after opening weekend, I think $200 for the opener.

In Lamb County (Littlefield, Olton, etc), I saw potential for a decent quail and pheasant year when I was up there in September. Lots of water in playas and quite a bit more corn and grain sorghum than the last few years. Weed should be plentiful this year.

Pretty sure the pheasant hunting will be a little better this year. Saw quite a few birds around Plainview and Olton back in September. But, it still won't be as good as it was several years back.

Usually, the chamber's of commerce (etc.) will purchase some birds to add to the fields ensuring folks enjoy the hunting experience...since they are non profit entity and primarily marketing oriented they do a nice job usually.
