Thursday evening my son was hunting a feeder that is about 100 yards and down a hill from the fence on one side of our place. He was sitting in a brush blind hoping to bag a Thanksgiving turkey with a shotgun. At about 5:45 I hear a shot and start waiting for him to text me and tell me what he got. Almost 10 minutes go by with no text and he finally sends me one that says there is a deer stuck in the fence and he needs my help. That was not what I was expecting to hear and wonder about the shot I heard. So I hurry out of the blind and get the truck and race down to where he is hunting. That’s when he tells me that no, he didn’t shoot the deer and we should grab some ropes or pliers or something to help get this deer free. We get over to the fence line and stuck in a small hole in the fence is a NICE buck. He is a big 10 point buck, maybe a 130 class deer, with 2 kickers on his right G2, and he is freaking the heck out about being stuck in the fence and us approaching him. As we stood there for a minute assessing the situation and trying to come up with a plan to free him, he finally breaks his way free and trots away stopping briefly to look back at what the heck just happened. I ask him about the shot and he tells me that he heard the buck thrashing around in the fence and as he walked up the hill he saw a coyote that was clearly thinking about making a meal out of that buck, so he shot at the coyote to save the buck. He missed the coyote, but I’m really proud of what a fine sportsman my son has become. That is likely the biggest deer we will see all year and he was very pleased with himself for his effort to save that buck. Many a lesser man would have shot that deer in that situation. Now we get to hunt that buck the rest of the season and my son understands that if we don’t see him again, that’s fine, and if we do get him we gave him a fair chance.

great story...whats crazy is that we had a yearlign caught in our fence last week!! I was hunting out of my stand and decided at about 330 to walk to a different one because of the wind, i walked down the fence line to get there. well at 530, my brother is headed back to the cabin on the four wheeler cause he had shot a doe, and he texts my dad and i that there is a deer hung by its hind legs along MY fence line...i had just walked there hours before...crazy...so we go get her out and hold her for a second so she can catch her breath and let her go and she took off and stopped about 50 yards, turned and gave us a big tail flick as to say thanks and slowly trotted off...Didnt mean to high jack your thread, just thought id share a similar ordeal
