Going to hit it again this am. Hoping at least the doe were out last night and covered the area in scent so the bucks will be prowling...we'll see. Gotta get something today or my man card is going to be revoked by the wifey

No deer this am except the one that blew at us on the way to the blind.
But we did get a yote, came in from our left and we were downwind, son got his gun up and I squeaked him, and he came to us on a beeline, son put the hurt on him.
Truck pulling in the neighboring property (oil truck or something) and it is right next to our fence. Hunt over for the am. Will be back in a little bit.

Had a great hunt tonight. I figured the deer would be moving with the cooler weather and took a chance and went up for just a evening hunt. It paid off big time! Got to the blind and settled in, stayed pretty warm despite 38 degrees and wind. Just after feeder went off (5pm) we had 3 doe come in. It was an older doe and what looked like twins from this year. Told my son they were not on the hit list (soft heart for yearling deer). They made their way to the food plot and feeder and were totally unaware of us sitting there. after a short while we had a "regular" pack of 6 doe move in, they didn't come straight in but instead went behind the feeder and came in from the back. before they came all the way in though we caught a glimpse of my son's target buck for this season. he was pursuing the doe for sure. So we just waited and sure enough he followed right into the feeder pen. Well. a;; those girls were just too much and sure enough some cat fights erupted and some of the doe were run out into the food plot where they munched away. We kept our eyes open and within a short while we had another legal buck show up and go into the food plot. So now we had choices. We had the first one on camera quite a bit, he was a big bodied buck which appeared at least 4.5 yo, although not a great rack but enough to make us happy. The second buck was smaller bodied, probably 3.5 maybe 4.5 and was a little wider, but nothing enough to make us change our target on the fly. We knew the deer we wanted and just had to wait for him to move out of the feed pen. Sure enough, he did move out and my son was ready. I told him I would grunt and get him to stop and he could take the shot. It took me grunting three times before he finally heard me, but he stood straight up and bam...he ran off, could tell he was hit in the correct spot, but he made it all of about 60 yards before he stopped, then piled up. he was down for the count. Had I been looking for anything more, several of the deer stood around and watched him fall, and I could have taken another, but it wasn't my day; it was my son's first buck and I wasn't going to take anything away from it. Buck measured right at 14 inches inside, and will make a great addition to my son's room as a euro mount. Here he was on the hoof:

Good deal for your son. I bet he is proud of that deer. Great story as well.

Back at it today and tomorrow with some friends from SA. We had. Good hunt this am as both blinds saw shooter bucks, our blind the buck was small and was foowing 4 doe. Watched them for a whole before they left. Too early in the trip to shoot doe yet. The other blind had a single buck, a good buck I was told, but it got spooked before a shot could be taken. Hoping for more chances...

Back in the stand for the evening. A little warmer than expected but not terribly warm. Little wind as well, should be a good night. Hoping MR Right comes walking out to be greeted by my lead surprise.
Have some big prints around the feed pen that are recent, would like to see the guy that made them!!

Nothing tonight, but the hunt was doomed from the start.
Good news is we have all day tomorrow. Going to try some quail hunting with the boys in late am early pm then hit blinds for the last hunt of the trip. Hoping to connect on something tomorrow. Will keep everyone posted on the hunts.

Back in the saddle. We have seen 6 doe come in, eat, leave, and then saw them again about 500 yards away for a bit. Was fun watching them. Got a couple decent pics of them at a distance with the phone and binos. Wasn't expecting to see them walking/ running through an open field (was along a fence line). Wish mr big would decide to step out today. The other blind has seem a small 4pt and some doe as well, and just got a text saying the two are playing together (whatever that means ). Going to do some quail hunting today and then hit it again tonight.

Well just had a first. Spooked up three deer on the way into the blind. Opened the door and looked over and saw three deer running away, about 200 yards. Never had that happen while hunting (I know, I haven't hunted long) but what really shocked me was there were deer out that early. Have not seen much action at this lease at times other than dawn or dusk. We sit for usually long periods in am and pm but it just seems like all the action takes place within that "magic hour".
I hope that wasn't the only action we see this evening!

Back in the stand. Braved the roads to get out here. Couldn't be happier to be here. Sun just poked out for the first time since storm hit so I am hoping to see some hungry deer tonight. Roads were not terrible in 4x4, but montague and clay counties did it right by getting plows out and clearing a lane which allowed 65-70 mph traffic, was hitting 35-40 in tarrant and wise.
Little windy right now, but that should die down as sun sets, hoping to see mr big walk out!

Going back to the stand. Probably won't be doing any updates until I am back in the truck though since temps are in low teens and expected to drop to singles before sunrise. This will be the coldest I have hunted, my cabelas gear did a great job keeping me warm last night, hoping this morning is the same.

Not going to lie. It's chilly. Thankfully I have the wind blocked by my blind. Brisk 14 degrees. Sun just popped up. Still no movement other than squirrels and birds.
Just spotted the four doe from yesterday. In the neighbors field. Doesn't look like they are coming my way. At least something is moving.

Nothing other than thee same 4 doe I saw last night. Was hoping for more action but didn't even see any coyotes and the raccoons didn't hit the corn I left out last night. It must be just too cold for animals to go far. Give it to the ladies though, they were out last night and this am filling their bellies and showing their kids how to do it!

Back in the saddle until tomorrow evening. Had freezing rain this evening hunt but still had three doe under the feeder. Was trying to get one of my daughters on one but they never presented a clean shot outside the pen. Hopefully the clouds and cold will have the deer honkered down tonight and moving in the am. Looks like the weather will break tomorrow afternoon so hoping for some good action tomorrow.

Sitting in a dry box blind. That's the good news. Bad news is the ground is soaking and still getting the wet stuff...haha, not really bad news but not good for my hunt at the present. Looks like about another 30-45 minutes of rain and then it should come to a halt.
Rain all night and rain all morning will make for some hungry deer. Question is, when will they come out?

Saw three doe, same one from last night, off a distance about 300 yards. It was still raining when I saw them and they were moving quickly to get to some cover.
Rain is tapering off, but giving it a little break. Will be back Out there early afternoon for a long evening sit. Sun is supposed to peak out around 3-4, so if it does I would bet the deer will be moving looking for some food.

Alright rain is done, have a newly purchased little buddy roasting my girls in the blind with me, and we are waiting for the big one to come out to dinner.
In it for the evening. This will be my longest sit for an afternoon hunt this year, but of all the times, I think this one may be good. Time will tell. Wind is perfect too.
