I have a deer similar to that at my place except his rack doesn't have all the bumps that that one does. I have TC pics of him for last 2 years and he had velvet all through deer season last year and so far this year. Do the antlers get hard?

Do they shed?

They do not shed, nor get hard horned.

Been told it from eating the lichens and moss off tbe granite rocks as fawns. I don't see how, but just what I've been told. I think its genetic from a doe

We kill about 3-6 a year depending on how many buck tags we have left

Here is one I killed three weeks ago. They eat awesome, they never muscle up and get very fat.

I was always under the impression that these were doe with crazy genetics. I killed one about 15 years ago but don't know much about them.

The condition is called Hypogonadism, and it's fairly common in some areas of the Llano basin. In some areas, as much as 10% of the buck crop can have it. We have always called them "Cactus" or "Stag" bucks.

TPWD did substantial research on it in 1970. Their conclusion was that it was a result of some enzyme in the granite soils, similar to what Bobo said. I have a copy of the full paper, shoot me a PM if you're curious.

We have one that has been around a while. He/She is confused, sometimes runs with the bucks and sometimes with the does. He/She is also at least 6.5 years old, and has gotten pretty smart. They don't muscle up during the rut, and are built more like a doe.

We also had a buck killed last year who's nuts had never dropped. They were still up inside him. He had a small, under-developed rack like a 1.5yo would have. He was 3.5.

Here is one of the biggest I've ever seen, killed in Llano Co. this year.

We took one too at our place SE of Castell about 5 yrs ago.

The one one we took was hard horned though, but had 9 points around the bases and spikes about 10 inches long.

And like the others mentioned, no testicles. At least not where they were supposed to be.
