So would a Barney be classified as someone that has duck hunted for sometime and should know the difference in right or wrong and continues to do wrong? But what if a newbie doesn't have any guidance and continues to do the same?

I think most of the guys on here that constantly blame Barny are probably just as big of a barny to the guy they think is a barny

My definition of a Barney is: that one person or group that think they own the lake. Could be the new guy or the guy that's been hunting for 30 years.

I've never heard the term before venturing online. But I'd reserve it for the one's that don't show respect. We're all sportsman, whether you're a newbie or a seasoned vet. The moment you stop acting like one makes you a Barney in my book.

I just wish that term would die. It sounds stupid, and people who use it sound stupid.

When you are out on the lake, everyone but you are Barneys. If you talk to another hunter, and you like them, then they are not a Barney, otherwise they are.

Barnie was old time london slang for someone that is trouble. In irish slang as well, as in Barnie Rubble. Even locals only surfers used the slang long before duck hunters. It is a derogatory name for surfing tourists encroachIng on their turf causing trouble. It did not come from the purple dinosaur.
